I'm wondering if there's any other decoder box that I can get to hook up to my CTH dish and receive transmissions from the Vinasat satellite?

And what sort of programming is available?

Thanks

I asked a Truevisions technician the same question whilst he was making a service call.

The only suggestion he made was to realign the dish to pick up PSi and then get a PSi STB.

I think the dish would have to point towards the Thai com satellite.

I'm not sure but I think all of the feeds from Vinasat are encrypted so an off the shelf STB is of no use.

I had thought there would be some 'free to air' feeds on Vinasat?

I'll be in Viet Nam next week so will ask there about STBs that can decode Vinasat feeds and maybe bring one back.

Make good crab net anchor weights thats about all. Add them to my Dreambox collection. Forget satellite services; get a decent android box and high speed internet no more hassles .

what the hell is a CTH???

It's a satellite cable company.  How long have you been here?

Shows  quite a few channels from Vietnam  as un-encrypted

Great, thanks for that.

I'm not tech-savvy so please bear with me while I ask a few daft questions

The column  Frequency Beam EIRP (dBW)

lists a load of numbers for different feeds.

With my CTH dish will I be able to receive all those frequencies e.g. VTV at 3580 which is free to air? Or only the ones dedicated to CTH?

The K+ and VTC programming is from a subscription provider, would I be able to receive them with the correct STB and subscription? Or again only the CTH frequencies?

Will this depend on my transponder? Is it universal for all Ku frequencies or a limited range?

Frequencies in the 3 ghz range are C band you would need a 1.5 meter or larger dish and appropriate LNB. If your dish is smaller than 1.5 meters and solid its most likely a KU band 11-12 GHZ

The receiver can tune to either C or KU band depending on if you have the correct size dish and appropriate LNB

I've got the original CTH dish which is Ku band and 24 inches I think (?) but I've no idea of the frequencies?

If it's a general 11 - 12 GHz what in the Vinasat list can I receive?

You can try to manually  retune the receiver to  the 11-12 GHZ frequencies on the  Lyngsat page   shown in yellow

http://www.lyngsat.com/JCSAT-5A-and-Vinasat-1-2.html

Look in the receiver menus for "add transponder"  fill in as much details as you can and let the receiver search for new channels.

for example  transponder number 2

frequency 11008  polarisation Horizontal  SR ( symbol rate ) 28800   FEC  ( forward error correction ) 3/4

If you cant find the menu to add a new transponder  then try a full auto search.

Thanks Johng, I was thinking that the CTH box should receive other signals but whwEn I plugged it in again only the blank CTH channels came up.

I'll try tinkering and see what happens. Nothing to lose if I break it.

Would I also be able to connect up my old Dreambox and get something?

Yes you should be able to get something...whether its anything you want to watch is another matter

This is the list of all  transponders

http://www.lyngsat.com/JCSAT-5A-and-Vinasat-1-2.html

from all the satellites that are co located at 132 degrees east

(0.2 degrees is not detectable with a dish that small ) looks like there are 3 sats there

JCSAT-5A  Vinasat 1 and Vinasat 2  they all appear to the  dish to be in the same place no need to re align anything.

with your setup you can expect to get the channels  in the KU  11-12 GHZ band  shown in yellow from the above link

My wife wanted a TV on the outside covered patio. Her uncle is a pretty clever electrician. He told her which box to buy and he had an old dish. He put something together and it works great. It does have different programs that the box in the house. Neither has monthly charges.

I got into the menus and explored the transponder settings but got nowhere with any searches.

So the next question is, if I get a stb and card from a satellite service provider in VN and plug it in here in Thailand, willit work considering that the dish is supposedly pointing at the right satellite?

When you say got no where do you mean   it didn't find any channels or did it find channels but the screen was black ie encrypted.

before spending more money on new receiver and card  I would  carry on trying to get  something with the old setup first.

I  vaguely  remember that CTH was also broadcasting on Thaicom ( maybe only C band cant remember )

so could be worth trying to tune  for channels from Thaicom  maybe your dish is pointing there instead ?

http://www.lyngsat.com/Thaicom-5-6-8.html

12272 Horizontal   on Thaicom should give  lots of free channels according to Lyngsat

The box doesn't list Thaicom as an available satellite, only Vinasat 2
