LAMPANG: -- The Elephant Reintroduction Foundation and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment will release captive elephants into the wild on the auspicious occasion of Her Majesty the Queen's 84th birthday anniversary, the National News Bureau of Thailand (NNT) said today.

NNT reported that the chairman of the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation Sumet Tantivejkul has said the elephant reintroduction project was initiated to address Her Majesty’s concerns about habituated elephants and endangered animals.

He said the foundation has implemented the project since 1997 under the concept “captive elephants are wild elephants”.

So far, the foundation has released more than 100 elephants into their natural habitat.

The project is an important measure to reduce stray elephants and revive the elephant population in Thailand.

And how many have been recaptured and used for tourism :whistling:

wild elephant populations have fallen over 90% over the last 100 years mostly due to a lack of habitat. hope they are going to provide them some habitat to live in.

Try bulldozing a few more illegal resorts, temples & meditation centres on stolen forest land.  That might do it if enough were in the same forest.

Captive animals released into the wild rarely do well as they don't have the appropriate skills. These guys (gals) may be the exception...
