Car tent selling used car uninsured? Is this legal?

Featured Replies

I'm looking at purchasing a used car in Bangkok, and a Thai friend just informed fme that the car is currently under insured. (It was insured up to a few days ago)

Does anyone know if this is a legal?

Compulsory or elective insurance ?

Sure it is legal, just get your own insurance.

When you get the blue book you will just have to pay the back tax (road) from the time it ended if that has run out. You will need the compulsory insurance to get it road taxed if it has run out.

It is either compulsory insured or not, if you want additional "real" insurance then you can sort that..

Thanks for the replies, I made a spelling mistake, I meant to say that there is no insurance whatsoever. It ran out a few days ago. As far as compulsory or elective I will have to confirm.

buy it and get the man to tax and government insure it and put it in your name, then take out extra 1st class insurance

Why would it need to be insured sitting in the dealer's tent? Presumably he will have some form of motor traders insurance that covers any vehicle.

Compulsory insurance and registration would still be required to drive. But illegal to sell without that, no.

Technically speaking.

If the car is indeed uninsured, that you would also, technically, be unable to drive the vehicle on the road for test drive etc.

Upon the purchase of the vehicle, it is on the buyer to ensure that the vehicle have up-to-date tax registration and all the required insurance. You could negotiate with the tent to cover that cost but with a second hand dealer, that would be unlikely.

The car was registered, just didn't have elective insurance. We bought 1st class insurance on the day after purchasing the car. It was all sorted with the help of a friend. Took the car for a test drive (even though it was uninsured) and the dealer was fine with it.

Nice car too, Skoda Fabia vRS, twin charged engine. 40,000km on it and an immaculate service record. Was searching for some time till one like this came up.

where do you parts/service for that here? hope it was super cheap?

700k baht, 2012 model, quality and performance is very good. Plenty of service options. Although living in Samui will require a trip to Surat or Phuket. Parts can order online.

It would almost certainly be insured under his motor traders policy.

The whole car is a VW, or as near as dammit.

Skoda is owned by VAG (Volkswagen Audi group) so this car shares the tech of many other cars.

Engine is the same as several other models including polo gti, golf, Audi A1 etc. Has torque from 2000rpm.

The gearbox is a 7 speed DSG that shifts really well and will handle decent power.

In my opinion there is no comparison to the other hot hatch 4 door options currently on the market.

Batter with the seller so he includes first class insurance, compulsory and tax. I did last car I bought got it down to price I wanted to pay then told him I wanted it insured came to an agreement 5k extra from me got first class compulsory and he taxed it.

Care to explain?

What would you recommend for 700k as an alternative to my 'pile of junk'?

Just kidding really, but I would recommend a car/truck that all shops have parts for and know how to fix. I respect your choice.

Ah ok. Yes I agree, it is a bit of a trade off really. Not so much if you live in a major city with workshops who deal in them, but for me living in Samui it will require a drive to the mainland to get the work done and an online order to save money on parts. This personally doesn't bother me. I don't foresee any serious issues either because the car has such low mileage. It should just require the usual log book servicing.

Locally assembled cars in that price range didn't really inspire me at all. I wanted something with forced induction, 4 doors, and with a quality build. I also wanted something that could be modified to go faster also. There are stage 2 kits and even a few stage 3 kits that will bring the power up to 280hp should I want it. That is the same as the stage 2 gti and a lot cheaper.

Just take it to RPT  ECUThailand ...if it's not fast enough for you ...
