UPDATE: Airport fire drill causes panic among Hua Hin residents

HUA HIN:-- False reports of a plane crash at Hua Hin airport left local residents panicking on Tuesday.

Multiple reports were posted on social media that a plane had crashed at the north end of the runway close to Palm Hills Golf Course.

A video sent to Thaivisa showed thick smoke billowing across the adjacent highway, while images emerged of as many as seven emergency vehicles with lights flashing and sirens wailing in attendance on the airport runway

A taxi driver who was in the area at the time and had pulled over on Phetkasem Road next to the airport told Thaivisa.com: “I could see the smoke from Cha Am. There was a lot of smoke and I thought maybe there was a plane crash”.

Local residents poured out of their homes and drivers parked up on the side of the road as the the smoke and a strong smell of burning rubber filled the air.

However, it was later confirmed that emergency services were carrying out a training drill at the airport on Tuesday.

It is not known if emergency services had forewarned locals about the training exercise.

I drove past the airport around that time.

I just thought it was more of the usual stuff that is always on fire in Thai.

Nothing else happens at the airport,  might as well do something.

So the public was not informed about this? Maybe the guys in charge were too busy to write press releases about who will get an arrest warrant next week...

That's not 100% true

The grass / weeds grow there

This is quite the story,  I guess the media sources did not get the word out, if any

of the airport staff thought to do that at all.

Maybe  Nok Air or someone  was hoping that  there was  some sort of fire

protection, for them if they were to have any problems flying in or out of

Hua Hin.

Geezer

My company use to send us to a fire school to train. they lit tankers on fire with diesel fuel and you used a fire hose to fog the area so  someone could turn the valve off to shut off the fuel.

It was good training .

Only caused panic among the stupid ones...

Does not look like fake smoke

They use real fires in drills here. Its really good practice. In my condo we have a fire drill every year and training from the local fire department that involves putting out real fires. Much better than any drills i've been on in the western world...
