CHIANG MAI: -- POLICE ARE seeking cooperation from Chiang Mai late-night entertainment venues in enforcing anti-crime measures.

“All stakeholders must play a role in ensuring safety and boosting tourists’ satisfaction,” Provincial Police Region 5’s acting chief Pol Maj General Poonsap Prasertsak said yesterday at a meeting with more than 200 representatives from entertainment venues.

At the meeting, participants were briefed about relevant laws and how to efficiently install security cameras.

Don't the police or other government officials own many of the late-night venues?

" At the meeting, participants were briefed about relevant laws and how to efficiently install security cameras. "

QUESTION: Do you feel safer when you see security cameras?

I'm not clear about just how installing security cameras make someone safe... Obviously they make the job of finding the culprit easier AFTER committing a crime, but based on the hundreds of thousands of YouTube videos of crimes in progress, Criminals don't seem to care that there are security cameras everywhere. It doesn't seem to a deterrent...

It also seems that most crimes against tourists are 'spur of the moment' actions, rather than premeditated, planned-out criminal activities. Perhaps having a camera might deter a premeditated crime against an establishment, it certainly doesn't stop the pick-pockets at the airports or train stations who are preying upon the tourists. Plenty of cameras in those places.

And of course when a high profile crime happens, the security cameras just happen to be not working. :cheesy:
