Hi all, I'm researching buying a new car and have narrowed it down to either a 2WD 4 door Mitsu Triton AT OR a Ford Ranger XLT 2.2 AT. We run a restaurant and small guest house so the bed is handy fro rubbish and moving stuff. We have 2 kids hence needing the double cab.

Price wise they are very similar - the ford is slightly more expensive but there isn't much in it. I like the roomy cab in the Ford - looks to be more comfortable than the mitsu, also the reviews for the ford are excellent. I have test driven them both and liked both vehicles. I am wondering about the long term maintenance though. it seems that Triton owners seem very happy with their trucks and service from mitsu, whilst a small minority of Ford owners complain about poor service and maintenance issues. I want to make the decision this week and would love to get some feedback from owners of both trucks. Have about 200K to put down and need 30% down to secure finance as we don't score well for credit. Mitsu have offered us 55K B discount with repayments at 2.29% while ford have offered 80K discount at 3.8%. On 48 month payment plan. I realise the ford interest rate is high but actually in real terms its still 30% discount (@ 0% once you remove the interest) which is a pretty good offer.

I guess you didn't read the OP properly...  The OP doesn't want an SUV.

Or did you just want to point out that you can afford an SUV above a Pickup?

OP: If you are undecided sometimes a decent idea is to write a Pro's & Con's list...  then decide.

Include availability, time for delivery, safety ratings (i.e. ABS disks on all wheels), any additional services costs, duration of warranty, fuel economy, convenience of nearest service centre, reputation of nearest service centre, insurance costs... finally with all other things being equal, go with the one you like the look of most...

We actually need the bed - we had a suv before and its not that practical. Stopped using it to ferry rubbish after stinking the car out for a season - not pleasant! Cant do 2nd hand as we cant get finance and only have 200K to put down which gets you a banger that would cost you peanuts back in farang land. To be honest with cheap finance, discounts and warranty period new cars arent a bad deal.  Spent a fortune on our last vehicle just keeping it on the road, 2nd hand market here is hit and miss in my experience.

Richard good advice which I will take!

Any Mitsu or Ford fans/victims with feedback for me?

The headline says car.

Ford have fixed the problems which developed on both our cars. All the jobs were QC issues on parts from an external  supplier.

Very unfortunate the vehicles were with the dealer for several days as unknown to me, at the time, they were in a queue to be repaired.   Had I known I could have used at least one of them.

For out of warranty repairs ...it seems that they can riggle out of the 'we will supply your parts within 24hours or they will be free' by failing to order all the parts needed initially.

Seems you may have missed the 'cheap' finance deals offered on purchases at the Motor Expo which finished yesterday.

I've got a Flord in AustrALIA and a Mitsubishi in LOS.  In Australia I would haul rubbish to the tip in a trailer but in LOS I'd hire Somchai to get rid of the rubbish.   if your getting finance get a car, not a truck!

useful post

i looked at both when i was looking last year, went for the mitsu, better wheels, bigger screen display, cheaper, (they have an offer on at the moment), the ford has a 2.2 so cheaper yearly tax, i have done 20,000 in a year, can not fault the vehicle, comfort, room, performance, getting about 13 kilometers per litre. i fitted a roll up, velco down rear bed cover, about 2,000 baht from Bangkok, ideal for carrying larger items, and for day to day use. 2 services so far, one with dealer in pretchabun whilst on a trip at 10,000 and last week in Pattaya with the dealer i bought it from, both carried out quickly and no problems, just renewed insurance at 14,000 with maung Thai.

Having owned cars from both camps but not the exact car you're looking for, I can comment on the after sales services and cost.

Mitsubishi cars may appear cheap but the regular servicing can come to bite you soon enough. Sure labour is free, but the parts can add up quickly. Mitsubishi requires you bring in your vehicle once every 6 months or 10,000 km whichever comes first. You should get the list of cost for the various check up schedule.

Ford differs from Mitsubishi that the regular servicing is done once every 9 months or 15,000 km. You can also get the cost of the servicing online through Ford Website. Furthermore, Ford has their SPP promotion where you can pre-pay for your servicing and get it at a cheaper rate. Plus, you get the assurance should parts prices increases, you won't be affected by it.

Both after sales service in Bangkok is pretty good. I've never really had a major issue with both. Only once did I have to call up Ford Thailand to resolve an issue with a particular Ford Dealer.

The four times I have taken my Triton for the 6 month service, I have only been charged twice for the oil change and filter, around 1200 baht from memory. If the mileage is low (as is mine) they deem it unnecessary to do an oil change, so it's not like Mitsubishi are trying to grab every satang they can. Once the 3 year warranty has expired you only have to service the vehicle as often as mileage dictates, no different than any other pickup. In the 2 years I've had mine it's performed faultlessly, no problems of any kind.

Hi Steve thanks for the feedback. I wondered what you and others on the forum would think of an offer I got from mitsu - ex demo car that has done 20K. Sold as a new car so OK for finance lots of extras including the usual (film, liner, mats etc) plus 1st class insurance for 1 year, underseal, polimer covered and cost of registration. 90K discount. Model is 2016 there is a newer model has some cosmetic changes but otherwise identical car spec wise. Plus point is the 90K comes off the down payment so we can choose to pay more and reduce our monthly payments, downside lose 1 year of 5 year guarentee. Interest rate 2.29%. Other mitsu offer was 55K discount but charge of 6500B for registration.

so a 20,000 kilo 1 year old vehicle for a saving of 40,000 baht, not really worth it in my opinion, is it the colour you want

Hi Giddy was that with government assistance?  also what was your interest rate on repayments?

I have tried 3 dealers and 55K seems to the limit

No, that was a Mitsu discount for the 2014 models when the new shape was introduced that year. That promotion was at all Mitsu dealerships AFAIK. I paid cash so don't know anything about finance.

Great discount, unfortunately we don't have that sort of cash available!

I am yet to see a negative comment from anyone that owns a Triton, everyone seems to love them whereas there are some gripes about the Ford, or is that a false impression? Any ford drivers out there ready to rave about their trucks?

I have had 2 Rangers here and both have been flawless. The dealers sometimes need a kick up the bum, but I've found most Thais do, not just those who work for Ford.

We bought the Wildtrak but I test drove the XLT. It did lack the large screen and the interior seemed very dark. I'm not sure what levels of kit come with the XLT compared to the Mitsu, but Ford are usually more generous with safety kit such as airbags and electronic stability gubbins. The Ranger also rides better than the Mitsu, but it you don't intend to do long trips in it, then that may also not be an issue.

did you buy the 2.2 or 3.2? wondered whether 2.2 felt underpwered. The cab seemed much larger with the ranger, which is a factor with carrying the family around. Unfortunately we cant stretch the budget to the wildtrack, and to be honest apart from cosmetic stuff and a couple of safety features they are essentially identical unless I have missed something?

I guess thats the big difference, you are getting the wildtrack extras for the cost of an xlt with the mitsu, albeit that the ranger is a better truck, in fact they will both do the job.

The 2.2 did feel slow until I did a run up to Pai from Chiang Mai and the engine really came to life (it'll never set any speed records though). Another point is that I bought a manual which is also a bit peppier.

The increased price with the WT was very worthwhile when I bought mine as you get a fair bit of extra kit (for example, I just checked and the XLT has front airbags opposed to the WT's 6). I was actually looking to buy the Everest and I hate automatics and I didn't need 7 seats, so managed to save myself about 700k and ended up with a car with almost as high a spec and one that I actually prefer to drive.

Compare the 2 here:

The 2.4 triton will definitely be quicker than the 2.2 ranger, if that makes any difference. I've only ever driven my brother-in-laws old triton ages ago, which he traded for a pjs after another relative rolled it. I've only read positive review of the triton - pity the 5 speed auto gear box is a bit dated but it works well. The ranger looks better but Ford's service gives me time to pause and think more.

I had the 3 litre Isuzu D Max before I bought the Triton, and the 2.5 auto is certainly is no slouch. It has all the get up and go that I'll ever need, with very good fuel economy. The styling on the Fords may be trendier, and I'm sure they are good trucks, but I got a good deal on the Triton, and so far have no regrets.

you definitely got a great deal 100K discount is fantastic!

seems like the debate is tipping towards the mitsu considering my budget...

seems like its necessary to pay for the wildtrack to get full benefit of ford technology

Ford trucks are good; I had a 2.2 XLT first and then switched up to the 3.2 WT after 60,000 km so total of 110,00 km so far without any major issues. However, the after sales service at some Ford dealerships can be indifferent to abysmal. You need to advise where you are just in case you are lucky enough to have 'good' Ford support and service.

I have Triton, very pleased with it,no issues. My service history was 1st after 6 months, then every 12 months thereafter, as per the dealers instructions.
I haven't driven the Ford but have driven the Mazda BT50 which I believe is based on the same chassis, and the turning circle caused problems when negotiating the numerous tight u-turns around my area, maybe something to consider for the OP
