NO, not a Retirement/Marriage-VISA, Extension of stay it is!!!

I see many times, every day, every week, every mointh, and year after year,,,, how people are using the term "Retirement-VISA" or "Marriage-VISA",, when in fact they are having an EXTENSION OF STAY based on retirement, or even based on mariage when they are saying Marriage-VISA.

 

I see many times guys here on the forum, correct these "wrong-sayers" and explaining WHY it is so important to use the correct terms, when talking about VISA/Extensions and their situation in general here in Thailand.

 

But the most just dont get it, dont want to get it... It creates extra problem, when they are asking for advice and it creates missunderstandings, and people are given wrong explanations from others.

 

A VISA you buy that outside Thailand,,,, and an Extenmsion of stay is being processed and bought on  a Immigration-office INSIDE Thailand. OK???

 

So by this, I do hope people can be more careful, correct their friends using the wrong terms, and everybody can live happy, ever after......

Yes you are correct of course but no wonder people say "visa extension" when even signs at Immigration Offices (at least in Sakon Nakhon) say just that: Visa Extension...

Yes it is like UbonJoe says, when not even the employees at the Immigration offices knows the correct terms. VISA when it is in fact an Extension of stay, so sure not easy for common man to know this stuff.

 

BUT, there are too many people that just dont get´s it.. They see poster, after poster, after poster, saying to them.. it is wrong.... it is like this..... But they just dont have the strength to learn.....

 

No personally, I do not understand these people.. new country, new language, and new surroundings, and do not have the..."What"?? To try to use this excellent forum to learn finally....

Visa and Extension of Stay are just names for "similar" but "different" ways of staying in Thailand and they are all to often used interchangeably like they are identical things (which they are not) which can cause confusion.

The problem is that some people call everything a visa. People call a entry stamp a visa, a permit to stay a visa and etc.

And people will argue that they have a visa not an extension of stay even after being shown an extension stamp.

Full capitalisation would be shouting and i think the "bastions of correctness" would think you were being impolite and shouting on another strange note i did my 90 day report out of the area where my visa or to be correct EOS was issued  I fully expecting to be told to ......off   but not a blink of an eye from the same woman who told me i couldn't do it there  3 months earlier...

Finally some reactions.... maybe this will teach the most stubborn guys among us, to try to learn, even if we are old, there is still time to learn a bit, inbetween whatever you guys are doing...

 

A VISA is a VISA and an extenstion of stay is an Extension of stay..... How hard can it be to learn that?

You are just being a bastion of correctness and being pedantic .......... even immigration call it a retirement visa, plus you are making a VERY big assumption that people read thai visa for this info.

 

i would hasten to add i know very few other foreigners who live here who do visit this site

You can get a visa from immigration within Thailand.

If you use the correct terminology, you get the correct advice quicker.  If not, you will get it a few posts later and ruffled a few feathers.  For newbies it is forgivable, but for forum oldtimers its inexcusable.

True but you have to qualify for an extension of stay of some kind and not all extensions qualify to get one. Also the visa is only valid for the date it is issued and is immediately used when a 90 day entry is stamped.

Immigration does also issue the PE visa for Thai Elite.

55, when you look at the forum heading and sub-headings all are refered to as "visas or visa extentions", no mention at all of " extention of stay". 

Then you wonder why people are confused

The only way of dealing with such people, I think, would be to inform them that the only way in which they could "renew their visas" would be for them to make quarterly trips to places like Vientiane or Penang in order to obtain fresh real genuine McCoy single-entry non-O visas!

Maybe you should be a bit more polite.

The op is 100% correct. There is no doubt about it.

Maybe if you had spent years on this forum trying to help people as UbonJoe, Lopburi3 and others have done you might understand.

 

There is nothing worse than spending hours trying to understand what someone actually has in their passport owing to fact that they are clueless or choose to use the wrong terminology.

They then complain that they get the wrong advise.

I wonder why?

So enjoy your quarterly trips to Vientiane or Penang to "renew your retirement visa" then! Most of the rest of us much prefer annual trips to our local immigration office for an extension of stay!!

The confusion is compounded by the immigration officers often using the wrong nomenclature too.  Perhaps we should call the various statuses by their thai names  --   if anyone dares to tackle the spelling in the western alphabet

Not all Visas are single entry.

Every time I enter the Kingdom with my Multiple Entry OA Visa issued on the Basis of Retirement, I am entering and staying on a Visa until it expires.

Doesnt help that immigration, embassies and consuls overseas also use the incorrect terminology.. 

 

The simple fact it these fundamental aspects then lead to so much confusion and even incorrect advice.

So then you 'enter' on the visa.. and it generates a 1 year permission to stay, which allows you to remain.. That permission of stay can be extended, or you can leave and re-enter for the validity you hold the visa. 

 

Your not staying on the visa.. Only entering with it. This much is clear when you enter before the visa expires, generating a 1 year permission to stay well past the validity of the visa.

Ooops, I think you slipped more than once there my friend.... your 90 retirement-VISA is probably a 90 day report, confirming your address, nothing else...

Most of the confusion is caused by it being a total pain in the ass to stay in Thailand legally when other countries welcome long stayers who contribute to their economy. I don't care a rats ass what people call them, so long as they get their 'extension'
