CHIANG RAI: -- CCTV cameras caught a car smashing into a Chiang Rai gold shop in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

But within seconds the driver - who appeared to have hit a parked car - reversed out of the shop and raced off into the night.

The owner of the Sai Uthai Gold Shop in Thanalai Road said that neighbors had called her immediately after the 2.03 am incident to

report the matter as the burglar alarm was sounding, reports Thai News Agency.

CCTV did not record the license plate but Honda parts were found inside the shop.

Damage to metal shutters, the front window and a showcase inside was 400,000 baht. The shop was shut pending repairs.

The owner appealed to anyone who either witnessed the incident or who has information to contact the Chiang Rai police.

The road has many gold shops and is equipped with many CCTV cameras set up by the shops themselves, police and the local authority.

It is a straight road and Thai News Agency said it is an unlikely candidate for a road accident of this sort.
