Police Chief’s ‘advisory’ cash from booze company deemed totally legit

Just one day after giving Metropolitan Police Chief Sanit Mahathavorn and ThaiBev a week to explain why the official is accepting monthly payments for “advising” the giant booze company, the Royal Thai Police announced that Sanit isn’t breaking any police policies by taking a monthly handout from the country’s biggest alcohol company.

Hmmm...really?

Sanit has gotten a payment of THB50,000 each month from ThaiBev since sometime in 2015, according to details released from his official assets declaration.

No corruption there, just giving back to the local community police.

It's common practice for businesses in Thailand to give a little help to the Boys in Brown. I think that's all we have going on here. Nothing scandalous.

Thailand needs corruption. It is the hub of the wheel that keeps the economy oiled and running smoothly. If it didn't have corruption the whole country's economy would collapse like a house of cards. The small people fund it but that's OK by the big boys.

Prayuth Chan (O) Cha, is this really acceptable to you that someone in a High ranking government public office is receiving a monthly Salary from a private company that is involved in this sort of business.............only in Thailand

On a scale of 1-10 this ranks pretty much near a 10 for blatant in your face corruption, people who are tasked to uphold the law should not be in the pocket of any business let alone one that might be looking for favours, what exactly qualifies this man to be of any interest to this company, does he hold some sort of business degree ?

Just another example of what is fundamentally wrong with this country - caught drunk driving - oh not to worry the Police chief is in my back pocket - one phone call and it will be sorted

If this sort of bull is allowed to continue here then nothing will ever improve - 3rd world hub of Asia

Surely it depends on what services he provided to the company.  Do you think all the thai cops sitting in gold shops are volunteering?

Coming soon ...Falangness whining about how hard it is to buy alcohol under the Junta.

I seem to be nearly the only to consider this aspect if he problem, but this guy is also member of the NLA. It means he can influence laws that may apply to the company paying him (probably not really, as it is a ruber stamp assembly), and can at least provide insider's information to them.

Honorable and benevolent of Thai Bev I'm sure. How much of the 50,000 per month did Sanit pass along to widows and orphans of police officers killed on the job. How much went into his personal account, not to a fund for officers afflicted with carrer ending illnesses? There is a difference.

Small scale sponsorship, just for logos on local police cars to help pay for them, was creeping into some U.K. Police forces, but even that has been severely restricted due to accusations of conflict of interest.

When a chief police officer here even publicly declares a payment which shows a clear conflict of interest, it demonstrates the extent of the reach of corruption when his police force says it is legitimate. If there are no policies against it, then there should be. What hope is there of stamping out lower level tea money corruption if the bosses are indulging in it at high levels.

It reinforces my view that the time has come for a separation of the police and the armed forces from business and politics as is mandated in most developed countries. Their job is to protect the public and defend the country, not to run airlines, banks, bars and other commercial enterprises and civil government. If there is no separation, corruption flourishes . There is no incentive for law enforcement to deal with illegality which will affect their income.

i would look to the new King and the PM, himself a product of the Army, to demonstrate their commitment to progress, unity and democracy by starting the process of demilitarizing and removing the police from the commercial and political sectors. They could also change the system where everyone from teachers to tax collectors have quasi military ceremonial uniforms.

I guess it's progress that stuff like this is out in the open.

Just a few years ago no one would have publicly disclosed this sort of thing, and if they had, they would have been dealt with - defamation suit or concrete footwear.

The obvious questions for ThaiBev shareholders would be:

how are these payments accounted for/expensed? Sales and marketing?

what are the total payments made, and to whom?

who in ThaiBev approved these?

how long has this been going on?

do these payments meet their corporate standards? If not, will those be changed?

A savvy Thai would buy one share, file a suit, ask for discovery, then start digging his own shallow grave.

why would it hurt me, what a stupid thing to say, and I am far from a Junta lover but unlike you I have an open mind and can think for myself

Unlike you I call a spade a spade and unlike you not something my immature imagination dreams up on the day

If you have another solution to solving Thailands many deep embedded problems then lets hear them..........................no didn't think so, it's easy just to sit there and mouth off at other posters from the presumed safety of your keyboard
