PHUKET:-- Scores of police and other Phuket law-enforcement officers targeted bars and other nightlife venues on Bangla Rd on Monday night (Jan 30), ordering the venue operators to follow the law and close on time.

Accordingly, all bars and clubs within the designated “entertainment zone” in Phuket top party town closed at 1am, while those outside the zone were ordered to close at midnight.

The sortie of officers massed at the traditional police assembly point in front of the police box at the beach end of Bangla Rd at 11pm, when they were briefed on their objectives as paid out by a direct order from Phuket Governor Chockchai Dejamornthan.

Delivering their mission was Phuket Provincial Chief Administrative Officer (Palad) Thawornwat Khongkaew, accompanied by Patong Police Chief Col Chaiwat Uikum and Kathu District Chief Chief Sayan Chanachaiwong, among others.

“I want Phuket to be neat and correct and legal so that officials can take care of security of life and property of tourists and Phuket ‘brothers and sisters’ in order to boost confidence (in) and the image of Phuket Province,” the order read.

The officers separated into five teams to cover the busy area, with the popular Hollywood, White Room, Illusion, Tiger nightclub, Ecstasy nightclub and the renowned Taipan nightclub all raided and “asked for co-operation” in closing on time.

More ill conceived plans. Am.sure the tourists were thrilled when their night in a club was curtailed when uniformed officers stormed into the building in force.

I think actions like this will only boost their confidence that Phuket is not the best place to holiday and party in the region ?

Continuing "cleaning up" may change the kind of tourist coming – some do come to Thailand for little later nightlife than midnight or 1 am, and some do come to sit in a chair under an umbrella on the beach, and being able to order something to drink or a snak from beach vendors, and have a lunch in a cozy beach restaurant; not to forget "candlelight dinner on the beach".

Might be changes will bring more so-called "quality tourists" in, looking for nature beaches and silent nights, instead of the "usual suspects"; however, are the infrastructure ready for these "quality tourists", and do they spend more money than the usual ones, now seeking other areas that might love for taking over the business..?

I'm in doubt, as it seem like the Chinese replacement has not been that successful all over – maybe it's better with smaller steps and keep some of the existing business...:whistling:

Time for the businesses to renegotiate with the authorities, huh.

That's the way I see it. The first salvo to get everyone's attention in the

upward negotiation of the police widows and orphans fund. :whistling:
