FOREIGN TOURISTS will be able to explore major attractions along the Saen Saep and Banglumpoo canals, using new tour boat services on the Bangkok waterways from April.

Chaovalit Metthayapraphat, chief executive officer of Family Transport (2002) Co, which runs services on Saen Saep Canal and operates the Kwan Riam floating market, said the family business planned to launch six additional boats in a service called Bangkok Canal that will link Bangkok’s old town with the new metropolis.

The route will link the Pratunam Pier near the Ratchaprasong intersection with the old town of Banglumpoo near the Khao San Road backpacker precinct, using the Saen Saep and Banglumpoo canals. Attractions along the route include the MBK mall and sports market, the Bobae wholesale centre, Golden Mountain and Khao San Road.

Hopefully, they'll have set prices.  Currently, it's terrible to deal with these boatmen.  A total rip off at times.

They do have set prices and they're displayed on the piers, though you're right the boatmen, or should I say boatpersons, do ask for differing fares, but at least they give you a ticket that reflects the fare you've paid.
My regular fare is 13 Baht, sometimes I'm asked for 15 Baht whilst yesterday I was charged 11 Baht.
I've seen the new boats and they seem better, never been on one yet.

My problems were with the ones doing the tours.  One went at us aggressively when I decided I'd hand enough with the haggling.  Super aggressive.  Almost had to call the police...that that would have helped! LOL

Are you sure you were dealing with a boat driver/owner? At most piers where you can easily find those longtails the tourist business is sown up by a mini-mafia and you have to deal with them to be able to rent a boat from there - and yes they are pricks.

If it is something you do regularly, the best way is to find a decent driver/owner (most of them are, from my experience) and then get his phone number.

The one I have used for years will pick me up from anywhere I like except those heavily touristed piers. He told me that if we get on his boat at one of those piers he has to pay the touts no matter what.

Do you mean the canal boats?

They have fixed charges. I have never been ripped off.
Inly once did a woman claim she had given me change from a 20 baht note, when in fact she hadn't.

We went to the nonthaburi pier to take the passengerboat, while we passed the longtailboat guys to ko-kret they yelled very loud to me and my wife but when we didn't pay attention to them they started to call my wife a Ho....and all laughed loud while pointing at her...

I hope those guys go bankrupt with their very loud noisy crappy longtailboats...what a rude idiots they are.
