The Rock Pub

Featured Replies

I went to the rock pub in Ratchatewi few weeks back when they had a battle of the band on. It was pretty damn good but has been kinda dead since then. Where else can I listen or watch heavy  metal and hard rock. About 6 years ago there was a place in Thong Lo that had bands playing but its not there now. Does Bangkok only have the one place for that kinda music?

Sadly, I would say: Almost nowhere.

I remember that small live Club at Soi Thonglor too, but it only lasted 1-2 years if I remember that right. They even had international 2nd league Indie acts playing there.

If I do miss ONE thing here in LOS, it is indeed "my" music and particularly the live acts, and my 1.500 CDs here next to me do not make up for it.  Since I saw the Buzzcocks in 2009, I haven't found any live act that I would really like and the ticket affordable at the same time. There are some good Thai bands too, but even the noisiest and trashiest ones cannot get rid of some sort of "Thai mellowness"  after a few years. Liked Slot Machine a lot, their first two albums r great, Modern Dog, Abuse the Youth, Ebola..... you name it....

Saw Slot Machine back in 2004 at a "Thai Indie Festival" at BEC TERO HALL in SuanLum, some bands were really what you could call "alternative" or "Indie" (while the majority was not, but it was still worth going just for the atmosphere).

There was one tiny CD shop at the Mall Bangkapi that advertised live underground acts on hand-written and copied flyers like they did it during the early Punk wave in the late 70ies, but that was years ago and I believe this shop could not survive over the years.

The small CD shops at Siam Square that could tell you about something going on are no longer as well, and the red shirts burning this area down did not help either
