BANGKOK: -- The Labour Ministry plans to provide training programmes for Bangkok Mass Transit Authority fare collectors laid-off due to the introduction of an electronic payment system on BMTA buses.

The ministry confirmed that some 4,000 fare collectors would be terminated this year following the implementation of the electronic fare system, Thai National News Bureau reported.

The Department of Labour Protection and Welfare (DLPW) will propose an early retirement scheme for many of the laid-off employees. They will receive benefits according to the State Enterprise Labour Relations Act.

The DLPW will provide training programmes and a transition service for fare collectors who wish to work as bus drivers and help find other jobs for them, while the BMTA is considering hiring former fare collectors in other positions.
