BANGKOK: -- Metropolitan police chief Sanit Mahathavorn announced that a force of 400 police officers has been mobilized for traffic duty in the capital during Songkran.

Sanook reported that their main task will be to check for drink driving.

Sanook said that most problems on the roads were alcohol related and that apart from checkpoints all people involved in accidents would have their breath tested for alcohol.

Sanit said that he had high hopes that with measures such as these there would be less accidents on the capital's roads during the holidays this year.

Along with this reported initiative...and the government and police sprouting strict enforcement....I would imagine the reporting of fatalities may be adjusted...the day by day habit of body counting in the media may also be tarted up.

Just can't have any loss of face after the great thought, time and planning have gone into Thailand' Songkran road safety campaigns

and why is this large force of traffic police not mobilized for the other358 days of the year

Mobilization is too strong of a word for sitting in the shady comfort of your roadside tent,  reading newspapers, watching TV and shooting the breeze

Hardly what I consider an effective use of resources to prevent the slaughter on the roads

Great pic How can you take these guys seriously I had a bloody cop car go through a red light on me today and took my right of way What a joke

Nice line up of new motor cycles, and a nice brown envelope for the officer that purchased them
