Sukhumvit Baraku bar raided
By The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Troops and police raided a bar on Soi Sukhumvit 3 early Monday morning and seized 30 Baraku smoking devices and one kilogram of tobacco.

The raid against Bamboo Restaurant happened at about 12.30am.

The authorities arrested the manager, Withoon Kongthaworn, 45, for allegedly providing a Baraku service without a licence and for having Baraku devices without paying import excise on them.

He was taken to Lumpini Police Station for legal action.

"Baraku", TV forum educates

Is it any different from a "shisha"?

Soi 3, who thought they would find such stuff there

"Baraku" is a bastardization of "Burakumin" which is actually a name for a group of people, rather than a smoking apparatus.

The "Burakumin" are an outcast sect/group in Japan who have historically been victims of discrimination and were/are generally regarded as 'untouchables'.

Such a shame what happened to soi 3 and most importantly Bamboo Bar.  Bamboo used to be one of my favorite places to go in Bangkok.  Good pool tables, fun atmosphere and decent live music (the only live hip hop I knew of in bkk).  Now I steer far clear of soi 3 unless I need to go to bumrungrad.
