I disagree. My GSXR600 was a very good street bike. I now have a MT09 which is better, but an inline 4 600 is far from "complete crap" on the street. Narrow, smooth, quick, light. Unless you're extremely unfit they make good street bikes. 

 

R3 is also pretty good on the street for similar reasons, but it's a bit more upright with better legroom that an R6. 

I am riding an MT-09, everyday, here in Singapore.

As its Traffic Lights to Traffic Lights here I lowered the gearing (1 x tooth extra on the rear). It made a great difference.
