Prayut accepts Trump’s invitation to White House
By The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha accepted an invitation to visit the White House extended by US President Donald Trump during a brief phone conversation on Sunday.

Trump called both Prayut and Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong as he marked his first 100 days in office to address his commitment to longstanding alliances in the context of stability in the Asia-Pacific region, notably the Korean Peninsula.

“President Trump and Prime Minister Prayut expressed a strong shared interest in strengthening trade and economic ties between the two countries,” said a White House statement.

“President Trump affirmed the commitment of the US to playing an active and leading role in Asia, in close cooperation with partners and allies like Thailand,” it said.

In the conversation, Prayut congratulated Trump on his election and first 100 days as president. He also thanked Trump for his message of condolences last year on the passing of the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, deputy government spokesman Werachon Sukondhapatipak said.

Prayut thanked and accepted Trump’s invitation to visit the US and extended an invitation to the president to visit Thailand at a

convenient time, he said.

The introductory call lasted around 15 minutes with no specific issue dominating the conversation, said the spokesman, who was on hand to interpret for Prayut, although the premier mostly spoke directly to Trump in English.

Relations between Thailand and the US cooled during Barack Obama’s administration due to the former president’s criticism of the Prayut-led military coup in 2014 and his comments on the suppression of human rights and democracy.

Under the Trump administration, Thailand is still listed on the US unfair trade “watch list”, but Werachon said the two leaders did not mention US concerns about the trade deficit.

I hope Trump tells this 'dude' about reciprocity and how he plans to reduce current US visas for Thais to match what the Thai government issue to Americans, which is of course the 1 year maximum.

With a bit of luck he will also ban all Thais from owning land in the US as part of his reciprocity drive.

Trump "You do not need a sub mate as we can sink it from here now go home and make your country free again and I will use your country my way. Now Pi>> off and do not get on my radar again" with a bit of luck

White house says: “President Trump and Prime Minister Prayut expressed a strong shared interest in strengthening trade and economic ties between the two countries,”

“President Trump affirmed the commitment of the US to playing an active and leading role in Asia, in close cooperation with partners and allies like Thailand,”

Only the Thai spokesperson mentions Prayuth being invited to the White Houes at a "convenient time". 5 months down the line a journo will ask Prayuth, "Why haven't you been to see Trump yet?", to which he'll reply, "I am so busy that I couldn't find a convenient time" after which the Thai spokesperso will mention that Trump was disappointed that Prayuth couldn't visit, but he understood the roadmap a d thought Prayuth was the best leader SEA had ever seen.

It's far easier for a US citizen to get a visa for Thailand than vice versa. Maybe they could start there?

Prayut, Lee and Duterte - quite the trio. Many portraits in the WH will shed tears.

Meh. Most Thais have no issues getting the visa they need.

The EB5 visa (investment, $500,000) allows for the purchase of some types of housing, and gives a green card.

Actually the invite Trump offered the PM of Thailand and the President of the Philippines were just the result of random calls Donald was making at 3am in the morning after he got tied of tweeting about being the greatest Prez of all time during his first 100 days in office.

They can have a great time fantasizing with each other about their popularity and how they have worked wonders for their countries. They should get on bigly.

He'd be a fool not too accept said invitation .

However. I'm very surprised a so called world leader , namely Donald Trump, whom I actually like, who was democratically voted the leader of a democratic nation and so called free world, (hmmm, who is supposedly a supporter of democracy, should invite an unelected dictator to attend said meeting!?

Although the junta, in some areas, are making slow progress by trying to achieve better and greater things for the nation, the fact still remains that the junta seized power by force and have yet to allow an election to take place in order for the nation as a whole, to have the basic right to vote on whom they consider the best party to guide their country.

This is an obvious fact and cannot be dismissed.

This meeting is possibly for reasons connected with the military, rather than for industry and trade?

In Trump's idiosyncratic mind, he does seem to have a small spark of brilliance. These 3 leaders have close relationship with China and Trump need all the leverages you can

muster to get China to lean on North Korea. More leaders voicing concern on NK with China will be helpful to Trump. Last I heard, Duterte not taking the bait and may not visit the WH. Of course Prayut frantically trying to find friends and every opportunity to brag about his legitimacy will go. Lee ever the smart fence sitter will go too.

How about after the next election. Trump might be out of office by then.

Things have changed since 48% of voters were conned by the Big Liar leading up to last November. And despite his flip flops and more lies since taking Office, majority of Donnie's voter support still exists. As per Bill Maher, American is stupid.

Donnie's exceedingly rare brilliance is an outcome of his ignorance, stupidity or just pure dumb luck!

Some people prefer loud and flashy over dull and competent.  Flashy is easy to recognize, recognizing competence requires a certain degree of knowledge.

Realizing that they made a mistake would require the 48% to think.  It's much easier to just trust loud and flashy when he say's that he's doing great, and when he isn't it's someone else's fault.

Maybe when prices go up due to tariffs, exports go down due to other countries' retaliation (primarily hurting the farming states that voted for Trump), people lose their health care and manufacturing jobs don't come back the 48% will realize they were conned.  But I doubt it.
