Doves at the Gate

We used to have a lovely mixture of birds in the garden. Lately, it seems that we have a overpopulation of Doves. and other birds are withdrawing.

I guess, nothing one can do against this relentless sound plague.

I think it is just the season.  Many of the other birds will have migrated, or are breeding now.. so on nests.

 

If the doves are annoying you, try getting a plastic owl and fixing it up on your house or wall.. that usually freaks them out!

 

Also, obviously, don't put any seed out to feed the birds.. as this will encourage the doves to come for dinner.  If you want to see different birds.. feed fruit like banana, papaya, etc which the doves don't eat.

I have never seen doves frighten off other birds. Are you sure you don't mean pigeons?

Also if you have squirrels these could be raiding the nests which would mean less birds.

Hang up some ripe bananas, you will at least get some red whiskered bulbuls.

We got 20 banana trees. Lots of fruits but only ir_ regularly harvested. Yes we have squirrels . We could train them so that they go after dove nests. I admit, I don't know the difference between dove and pigeons.
Owl idea is good.

Don't know a dove from a pigeon but counts banana trees. Buy a bird book.

'other birds are withdrawing' - I noticed the same in our orchard.

May be the doves are interrupting the communication of different birds.

In the 'city' our neighbours love the doves, so there is a lot of noise,

almost the whole day. And I really understand that you wrote

'... this relentless sound plague'.

I think the only thing you could do is chase them away.

As they are intelligent (or smart) animals they will understand

that you don't want/like them and they will chose another home.

To be honest the noise of doves and pigeons may be hell.

At least for me.

So thanks for your absolutely sympathic post.

At least they are active from dawn to dusk.

( Just to inform: In Thailand and Indonesia, the birds are popular as pets because of their calls

and cooing competitions are held to find the bird with the best voice. )

What is the bird with the call that sounds like a bass woodwind?  I used to hear it when I lived outside of Udon Thani.  It was a really lovely sound, not at all raucous.

I'm guessing that's a Nok Kapoot, aka Greater Coucal; I love their whooping sounds: check out WhiteRussian's description:

I do remember seeing those birds scratching in tall grass around paddy dikes.  I wondered if they were some type of Pheasant or Grouse.

Yep, we had zebra doves in Hawai'i. It wasn't until I returned to LOS that I realized they are Thai natives.

 

Lots of cool songbirds down Thailand way. :)
