No, I think they are holes, which would explain the toothpick method mentioned .

Something doesn't look right. Small exposed screws sitting out from the wall.

Normally they would be flush and capped.

Anyway, be good to see a pic of the completed project.

Hey OP.

Using the blunt end of a nail or drill bit larger than the hole, hit the plastic around the hole from behind and see if a small white disc pops out.

Put it over the hole and give a light smack with a small hammer or a pair of pliers or something (from behind)
