In addition to the RJ-11 protectors I installed, and because after losing 4 routers to lightning I get a bit nervous,  I purchased today a fuseless telephone station protector as pictured below.

 

My understanding is that between the poles should be GDT's, which look like this. Is that correct?

In my protectors there is a white substance that actually feels like pumice stone. May be you can notgice from the pictures. Is this correct or should I replace these?

At the end of the day, if your installation gets struck with lightning, and the ground goes to millions of volts for a puufteenth of a second, ain't much going to help.
