List of special rules for reading Thai

Featured Replies

There’s a bunch of rules when it comes to spelling in Thai, such as implicit vowels, silent consonants, certain letter combinations are treated as other letters, limited consonant clusters are allowed, etc.

And then of course there is a list of exceptions that do not follow the standard rules.

Has anyone compiled a list with all rules to be used as a reference?

If I remember correctly, the AUA reading writing books cover the rules.

Specifically the reading book.

Also good is Smyth's Thai An Essential Grammar, the first edition of which is available as a free PDF download on the Internet.

$105 USD new on Amazon, do you have a link to the free version?

Why not pop along to AUA and buy their reading writing books? Cheaper.20170529_091020.jpg.40b62b2be8f15b4bf8190c446d6caf93.jpg

The Smyth book is available from both Kinokuniya and Asia Books (assuming you're in Thailand).  Around 1,500 baht.

Here's some other books that may help.

Just to be clear, I was looking for a short reference (ideally just one page) summarizing all the rules to be used as a reference.

No such thing.  Thai has so many exceptions to the rules (30+% of words are irregular) that the only way in the case of many exceptions is simply to list the irregular words.

There are no short cuts.  You simply have rigorously to learn the language ... and then practise lots.
