CHIANG MAI: -- A ten year old Chiang Mai girl has been chosen to represent Thailand in an upcoming major chess championships.

Araya Phrommuang - or Nong Euy - started playing the game when she was in the first year of primary school said her mum Orathai, 39.

"She was a bit of a crybaby," said Orathai,"and we were looking for something to attract her interest. She didn't like the game much at first but within a month of starting to learn it she was hooked".

In just her second year of playing she won a school prize and was proud to receive an award in front of her friends by the national flag at Montfort Withaya school.

Nong Euy - now in P4 - started taking the game more and more seriously even going to get training from masters in Bangkok several days a week and has now been chosen to represent the national team at an Asian festival in Turkmenistan.

All the best to her. Should be an inspiration to other kids whether it's chess or whatever they like to do. Practice makes perfect.
