So I am new to Thailand and found my wife already.  So we are planning to build a house using containers and seeing as I don't speak the language and she doesn't know anything about them I did a web search. This company called Container Kings comes up. So the web site price for the container I want is 39,000 baht but when their agent Bobby Shay called me he said the price was 45,000 baht plus crane service, trucking and installation. That sounded not so bad so I gave him my email address cause he said he needed to send me an invoice.

The invoice gave bank account info for another company with a note that he requires payment in full up front by bank transfer.

So far he has the best price but I am wondering if paying the whole thing up front is wise cause I have never met the sales agent or the Structural Engineer (Simon Foxx).

Do you guys have any advice for me on this?

probably has his own bonus added in, you need to go and look at the container to make sure its genuine for a start then legal papers signed including all costs and what you will be getting. Anything else without this is simply a huge risk, too many frauds here to simply transfer money with any legal paperwork and written guarantees although they dont mean a lot here either. I also looked at getting a converted container for out land for a weekend retreat, will wait till I can go look at it myself though

Never send full amount  for any services here. Usual practise after you have done due dilligance and satisfied (in this case after what you have said i would walk away sounds not right to me. I expect you feel the same).

You pay an upfront deposit if your full cost is say 50k i would deposit no more than 10k.

I would ask this guy for refrences and follow them up. If possible drop in to his place of buisness unannounced. All sounds very sus to me.

Ps man on LinkedIn might be a diffrent bloke

OP - all I can add is don't be tempted to cut corners with costs as it will invariably bite you firmly on the butt.  Look for reputable companies with an excellent track record.  This will involve paying the extra for peace of mind.  It's not difficult.  Up to you.

Thank you all. I am going to switch suppliers. The 100% up front had me wondering and with all your feedback, I google mapped the street address and it's an empty lot.

Given the container will be your home you'd be half smart to check em out thoroughly and spend a bit doing visits to their current builds. If they have everything to gain and everything to give then why not seek total transparency. If its simply a container purchase then you need to peel away a few layers price wise.

Normally you will have to pay deposit unless you are dealing under company name. Try look for a reputable company with established office, registered business with DBD, Vat registration and official documents.

Why the huge increase .Big demand suddenly for containers  ?

A lady down the road recently bought this container for only B20,000. But she said it was in rough shape. Even with the delivery costs and upgrades, this lady was satisfied.  Inside contains a small office with AC and an area to store motor oil which she hopes to sale online...

That doesn't look to bad for 20,000 baht .....  although we can't see the other sides.

The other sides are about the same. I didn't see any dents or rust. The inside had been insulated (with foil she said) and then sheetrocked. Her big problem with the container was receiving the WiFi signal from the house.

I have visited Container Kings headquarters in Bangkok. Also took a trip out to their facility in Nakon Pathom. They are a legit company. Simon is very helpful and knowledgeable for any metalwork and security requirements you might have. I also met Bobby briefly.

I am planning to use containers and will be buying from these guys. Their prices and service are very competitive, plus they are easy to deal with.

I have no affiliation with the company, just putting my opinion out there...

Quick question- does the paperwork specify a serial number for the container you've inspected and selected?

Lots of guys I know back in the US bought containers sight unseen and were less than satisfied with the condition of the one they received.  With no recourse, because they believed the sales guy.

I had one as an office at the farm in Australia, just ran a small lead through one of the vents to the antenna on the roof , wifi was great

Container prices have increased dramatically over the last few months due to steel prices and scrap etc PLUS the huge demand and lack of supply. Many of the main shipping companies are no longer releasing stock. In January a used container was $650 now they are $1300 upwards. Also there are CW (Cargo Worthy) or ASIS (As Is Condition) CW are higher priced and still have a valid CSC plate.

We deal with many delivery companies and a typical container truck will charge from 8000 baht for a journey of 200KM to around 25,000 for longer journeys. Also 20ft Lorries have an onboard crane whereas 40ft Lorries do not. Crane Hire is normally around 6000 - 8000 per day.

If anyone has any containers for sale in the price ranges mentioned in the above comments I will be happy to but them all.

Any useful contacts for container or delivery trucks are also more then welcome.

@impulse Most of the shipping companies will insist that the used containers are "decaled" before they are resold. This means all identification should be removed. When they are sold then yes they normally have a CSC plate which is an identifying plate which shows the manufacturer / year of manufacture and container serial / loading numbers as well as the last inspection and testing dates.

Any containers used for Cargo must have a Valid CSC plate and are classed as CARGO WORTHY. This means they are generally water tight and not too many dents / rust

ASIS containers do not normally have a valid CSC plates and are normally in rougher condition. Maybe some holes and rust etc. For home conversions the ASIS containers are fine but take a little more work.

Also best to remove any of the old flooring if you do a home. Just in case the original floor has any chemicals etc remaining.

Hope that helps

We went with a Thai company and they were happy with 50% down and handled delivery and the crane. They were also several thousand baht cheaper. As a wise man once said, never pay 100% up front for anything.

and apparently Foxy2000 works for container kings. Just one more reason to not buy from them.

Do you have an axe to grind here?

Other, more experienced, expats seem to have had no issues and have been happy to recommend.
