5 Million in the bank and want to chill out

I'm hoping that all my research is correct and that 90,000 total to spend is enough for a simple life.  Simple as in not renting 3-5 gals a week. Or more than a beer a day preferably home brew. Hell yes I'm bringing some yeast.
This is figuring on rent if about 15-20 k but you own  your house. And wife makes 20 k.  So she should be able to support her family and buy her lady supplies and clothes.  So I'm thinking your burn rate may be 50-70k.  So 5 m is 6+ years.  With no growth of investments.  But better to think about your career life.  And a cushion.   So kick back 2-3 great years.  Enjoy it.  Everyone will envy your choice on their death bed.

A year would be nice. 2-3 sound better.

I've noticed many only last 6to10 years at the most before they live the simple life no matter how much they came here with.

Same age as you used to have the same amount of money. Thailand has a way of helping you spend it, first rule stop telling everyone how much you have or you won't have it for long - good luck take care

Been here a good few yrs and know the score but thanks for the advice. You could also say that probably about most countries these days. Common sense and a get out of jail card is always required.

I suppose for some its never enough. Some worry some dont. I would always proceed with caution.

Invest it and after tax generate about 16K baht per month (assume a 4.25% return and 10% tax rate). Add that to your wife's 20K per month and you are good for eternity out in the sticks.

Crikey more than enough and sounds like you already own home and land or the wife does. You should be able to live very comfortable with this amount of money and yes you could afford many more trips.
Choke dee, much more than most of the others.
Good luck

Yes and still can not survive as the budget has to kick in some time and in most cases "money does not grow on tree"

A nice caring post, I think I can echo all your comments, fortunately just for today my finances are reasonably sound, but nothing compared to years gone bye, and that is OK

I was reading many other replies, and come to the conclusion there are many many unhappy, angry, and discontented Thai Visa Posters, fortunately I am not one of them, happiness spreads and heals if you allow it

God Bless today on, Fathers Day

Indeed well said and was told that count your blessings and be thankful for what you have or indeed not have, but it means different to the Thais and my charming wife was trying to explain to me the other week??

Surely no one thinks a guy in his 40's can retire forever on 5 million baht.  Not even at 60.   A big hospital bill could devour this.  Assume you live till 85 or 90  Do the math.

I do have bupa insurance which covers for 5 million baht of treatment.

I dont plan to retire but after working constantly for 29yrs I just beleive its time for a break. At 44 I still have my health and it would be great to spend more time with the wife and kids. On work rotation to Europe then Africa you miss a lot of special occasions.

The answer to your question. No I dont beleive I can retire. But my question also was how much chill out time before I have to get the boiler suit back on?

Retiring would be great mind you.

Well the time has come. My job in Africa has been Angolanised. Maybe trained the guy to quickly.

Fortunately I picked up another position back in Africa. I may as well keep working for now.

The chill out time will have to wait.

Keep working Baneko, while the work is there. I've spent more than 20 years doing fi/fo, with long stints in Africa. I know what you mean about wanting to chill out, especially after a few years of a crap roster. I've set a target bank balance to retire and as long as I reach it before I'm 60 I will be happy....5.5 years to go.

Decided to continue working as it makes sense to make hay while the sun shines. Im fortunate to have been kept busy through this oil slump. Lots of people looking for work.

If I pack in at 60 that gives me another bloody 15yrs. Haha. Nightmare.

Depends where you work and what you do. I like my job, so except for being away from home it's all good and when  I finally retire I don't want to get the sums wrong and retire into poverty, hence why I want another 5 years.

I still own a property in the UK with no mortgage and an income of 700uk per month. Approx 150k uk for the apartment. 2 Rai in Chonburi possibly 1.1 million and my home here probably 3.5. Im 44 and do have oppertunities. Just fancy a break before im too old to enjoy it.

Many expats have sod all more than enough to stay, and some are killing themselves because they have nothing left.

You have enough to live comfortably on what you have anywhere in LOS, as long as you don't go mad or fall out with your wife.

Many of us would give an arm or leg for half of what you have.

That's the sort of thinking that reigned supreme in Ireland before 2007. After the crash, banks could hardly give houses away.

Amsterdam is not Ireland mate.

The Brexit is giving Amsterdam wide wings.
