Can a Farang own a Truck or Motorcycle here in Thailand?

Recommended Posts

I had a friend from Canada ask me what a Farang can own here in Thailand, and if he is married what happens then if he wants a divorce from her.

I don't know and could not answer him, so I need some help here.

Foreigners can own cars, pick up trucks, motorcycles, and condo's. Assets acquired after marriage are subject to 50/50 split in the event of divorce.

Yes i agree with mark 5335, but sometimes you go to buy and the dealer will tell you only Thais can own vehicles, thats BS.

3 years ago i bought a new honda wave, first dealer we went to said no only Thais can own.

So we went to another Honda dealer, no problem, we need a copy of your passport and drivers license.

The funny part was, as most TV members know i have been paraplegic for nearly 4 years, made no difference to the dealer.

I bought motocycle in my name while on tourist visa. I even crossed border to Laos with this motocycle while on tourist visa. When I got married I listed this motocycle as my personal property acquired before marriage, so in case of divorce it will remain 100% mine.

Alhough they required I have thai driving motocycle licence before registering bike in my name.

A Canadian friends did the same   about  2 years ago; he got his motorcycle driving license and bought a motorcycle.  The most complicated was to get the residency certificate from Immigration.  In Chiangmai it was difficult at the time as they stopped doing it a few months. So he got an address letter from the Canadian Consulate to register the bike and get the driver license.  The Yamaha dealer did the paperwork for the registration of the motorcycle. NOTE: The Yamaha dealer had to confirm with the Chiangmai Land Transport office  that the Consulate address letter was acceptable as the Yamaha dealer office did not know that fact.

I have nothing, nada in my name.

Everything is in my Thai wifes name and I would'nt have it any other way.

I came here with a flightbag with some clothes and can leave the same way if need be, at a minutes notice.

Being a drifter all of my life but kind of settled down now as I am 80.:happy:

The question still remains an open pit of questions. As I was told you can own/drive up to a minibus but anything larger, Transport Auth will NOT issue licences for trucks etc to farrang. Please correct me if im wrong. Just repeating what was told to me in Udon Thani

Foreigners can own many different types of vehicles. ...If the marriage is registered you need to divorce using an attorney . Happened to my friend and he used a firm in Bangkok who he was very happy with, The Kingdom Law Group. It's so much easier to be single in the LOS.
