4 wheel is not only for off-road but safety when heavy rain or flooding. (For me the Everest looks more grown up and with 6-valve driving smoothly)

Till the gearbox gives out.

A friend of mine has just popped round. We got talking about what I received second hand for my old Spivo. I got more but Toyota offered me 590.000bt for an 8 year old 95tKm lump. He has just been offered from Mitsu for his 7 year old Paj 290.000bt and his had only done 35th km. Must tell you something. On the resale side of things. N/B both were unmarked.

I'm not sure if you have driven a car with cruise control before. It makes driving along express way much more relaxing. In fact it's already obsolete. Adaptive cruise control more advanced but you won't find in a fortuner. Did you consider Ford Everest? The top model has adaptive cruise control.

Used cruise control before on a trip in Iceland (which was ideal for the straight long roads without traffic) and loved it, but I have my doubts it will be so useful in Thailand.

As others already said, traffic is Thailand has a complete different dynamic. But I will think about it a bit more.

I also considered the Everest and love the looks but as I live on Phuket I only have 2 garages for a Ford and both have disastrous customer ratings online. I am simply not willing to buy a car without any possible customer care afterwards. If i lived in BKK I would give it some serious consideration, but not here on Phuket.

As most know I have just brought a new top model TRD Spivo

Yes I know not cheap but if you can afford it go for it. Resale on a 2.4 will be rubbish as everyone will want the 2.8.

Not going down the power route suffice to say you will be peed off when you realise that it is well under powered loaded.

I received well over 100th bht discount fully loaded. They do seem to be offering very good deals lately.

Ask around you might be very pleased on what's being offered for the top models. N/B not such good deals on the cheaper ones.

Someone mentioned the Ford Everest but they are even more expensive to start with.

I know that some have said that C/C is not needed but having in on runs is a Buddha send. Had it in the UK never used it. But here is a different matter. No aching feet and very relaxing after a long run.

At first I thought i wouldn't care about resale value as I am not planning to sell the car (in Europe cars become too expensive to maintain and people buy a new one every 5-10 years, but in Thailand you can keep a Toyota running for decades) but at some point the car needs to be sold anyways.

The discounts you mention are for cash payments only I suppose?

I am planning to buy on credit as we just bought a new house and need a kitchen, garden, furniture, etc also.

I would not but a Fortuner at all Look at the Isuzu MX a much better vehicle, more power more stable great suspension, why go with the Herd, that is Thai Mentality! also Nissan leaves it for dead.

Checked out the MuX and very recently they changed the interior to white leather.

Even the cars in the showroom already reminded me of an old couch my grandmother used to have.

Plus the whole car felt cheap, everything is plastic and ugly.

They do offer discount without asking and called back a week or two later asking if we had decided already and indicating an additional discount would be possible.

Guess the sales are not going well there.

Cruise control is only on the 2.8ltr model. So thats 160k for cruise control and a bigger engine.

Thats enough for me. I'll never buy another car without cruise control.  If they throw in a bigger motor so be it.

I've tried my relative's 2.4, it's plenty powerful enough and that 400cc won't make a huge difference, just extra 50Nm of torque. For smoother ride and less engine noise I would still recommend petrol version, I'm not sure there is a 2.7 NA engine available.

Attached is Ford everest brochure. With all the driving assist features, I think it's a better buy than the rest of the competitors if resale value is not a concern. 1499091406970.jpeg

Just but a one year old 3.2 everest and save 400-500K....my issue would mainly be with ford's service record, and to a lesser extent, reliability. It's improving but still way behind Toyota's.

For the majority of Ferang Ford owners the reliability issue is hardly tested , or any other Brand come to that. They go to to Issan at Songkran to er Moms, and to Pats a month later with Mates to get over it!!.Then its into 4 WD to get over the speed bumps in Big Cs Car Park once a month, this is an essential, time to collate info on drivers who pass them on the journey that exceed their 50 Kph max ,and relate their superiority, over a Beer on Sunday Lunch. .The Majority of my Chums, if not all spend more time cleaning the dam things than driving them. Be Happy why Worry.:partytime2:

Again, the Everest is not an option due to the horrific track record of customer service.

Even with a huge discount I would not buy a car without decent maintenance options, let alone pay similar or more than the Toyota.

Agree with you. You may like the design+ interior of the Ford but reliability and servicing remains an issue.

The 2.4 diesel is down about 30+ HP and similar for torque, the 2.8 has all it's torque (grunt) available at 1400rpm, the 2.4 is at 1600-2000rpm. Plus remember an auto box uses engine HP to operate it. If they hadn't put a very low first gear in the auto box the 2.4 probably would have been struggling a bit. Dismiss the petrol, cost a fortune to run and does not have the diesel grunt..

Petrol one 2.7 starts at 1.549.000bt 2.4G M/T start at 1.229.000. Bit of a difference for more fuel costs.

For your information there is NO engine noise in the new 2.8 even from cold. Due to the low compression of the new 2.8 lump. Only noise now is a bit of tyre rumble when going over those ribs in the road that tell you there's a U turn, and that's if you have the window open. Other than that it's like driving a petrol car.

Suggest you drive one and see.

And petrol one only makes sense here if you convert to use LPG or you have a hybrid. Hybrid isn't available and LPG conversion is not my thing. So by far best to use the robust Diesel engines.

It also costs more to maintain and for parts - this is straight from a ford sellers mouth.

Compared to the old one yes, Toyota has improved a lot on noise. I have tried both petrol and diesel version, there is no way a diesel car has less noise than a petrol version. Floor the accelerator and you will understand what I mean. Gasoline is much more refined than diesel.

I bet there wouldn't be much difference at cruising speed though. Nothing beats the punch of a diesel for overtaking. Plenty of cheap tuning options also. The 2.7 would need a turbo added to it to make it go with all that weight it has to carry.

I'm wondering why people here prefer pickup base SUVs. It's only popular here and you cant find these in USA EU and east Asia. Wouldnt a regular SUV suffice or there is not enough 7 seater regular SUV out there.

Bigger than a regular suv. Physics is on your side if another vehicle runs into you. Bigger inside too so 300 of the wives relatives can be piled in:) Better wading height for flooded roads. Good value for money as the tax is relatively lower on them (top for Everest in Australia is ca. 70K dollars - it's cheaper in Thailand). I find the small suv's like cx-5, crv to be quite small inside and cost about the same as a larger pickup based suv.

From headlightmag.com

2014-2018 Honda city cvt 0-100 11.19 sec, 80-120 8.11 sec. The older 5 speed autos were slower. Most of the other 1.5 cyl cars would be slower than the fortuner.

New fortuner 4wd 11.17 0-100 80-120 8.43 sec. 2wd should be a bit quicker.

So they are pretty close.
