UDON THANI, 7 July 2017 (NNT) - Various sectors have organized an activity to promote the government’s Pracharat road safety campaign in Udon Thani province.

The activity, presided over by National Reform Steering Assembly’s chairman for social reform Anothai Rittipanyawong, took place at Central Plaza Udon Thani. In his speech, Anothai said the Pracharat road safety campaign aims to instill a sense of social responsibility in motorists by raising awareness of traffic safety and compliance with traffic laws at all levels of society.

According to statistical data collected from October last year to July 3rd this year, road accidents in Udon Thani have injured 16,162 people and claimed 395 lives. The figures represent a ratio of roughly 25 deaths for every 100,000 people, exceeding the United Nations’ target rate of 10 deaths per 100,000. The accidents were mainly caused by speeding and driving under the influence.

The road safety campaign was held in honor of His Majesty late King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Her Majesty Queen Sirikit and His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn Bodindradebayavarangkun. It will officially kick off at Siam Paragon in Bangkok on August 31st. Another promotional activity will be held in Chiang Rai on July 21st.

No matter how much they promote or raise awareness, there's no avail as nobody are enforcing the rules...the regulations are just there on paper...

Purely an ongoing photo opportunity.....they probably have had zero training in safety at all....let alone road safety!

They may have the rules but where are the police during lunch time and after 5pm

This isn't the first time that they have done this. In past years the general hospital was involved with various promotions including street parades. Unfortunately such measures have achieved very little. Even as I write this, on the north side of the town, Nongsamrong, there are road works in progress updating the water drainage system, where in some cases single line traffic can just about squeeze through. Yet motor cyclist still insist on riding the wrong way through such narrow gaps and without helmets. in one case while cars waited for the mechanical digger to finish turning a motor cyclist thought otherwise and was knocked clean off the bike onto the central reservation. 'Stupid', no, more like mindless moron.

Yes, driving in Udon is getting to be horrendous. The amount of traffic has maybe trebled in 8 years, On the school run at traffic lights you are surrounded by a shoal of motorbikes weaving between the cars and trucks, half without helmets and turn signals are considered optional. All you can do is drive slowly in a straight line, anything else is inviting disaster. Add to this the wrong way traffic and lack of road etiquette, both totally ignored by the police, and it is not surprising there are so many accidents. Also too many farangs  go native in their driving habits here as well - we should at least set an example.

I only cope with it because i used to drive in Libya! (Even higher death rate.....)
