15 hurt in crash on Bang Na-Trat highway

By Nation

A speeding pickup truck overturned on the inbound Bang Na-Trat highway in Bang Na district on Saturday morning after it hit two cars, causing 15 injuries, police said.

Pol Captain Natthasit Thongcharoenporn, deputy inspector of Bang Na police station, said the accident happened at 8.30 am at kilometre marker No 2.

The pickup was transporting 12 workers to a construction site when it lost control and grazed two cars before it overturned in the right-hand lane.

The pickup driver and 12 workers were severely injured and they were rushed to the Piyamin Hospital. The drivers of the two other cars were slightly injured.

Natthasit said police would check CCTV footage before deciding whether to charge the pickup driver.

If I remember correctly the General backed off on enforcing the ban on the carrying of people in the back as it was said to be discriminatory to poor people. I also seem to remember hearing they will limit it to six only in the near future............which will be never......

I think the law forbids it. But nothing is enforced.
they tried to enforce it for a couple of days after Songkran, then it was back to business as usual.

No need to worry too munch.   It could well turn out that the construction workers seriously injured could well have come from Cambodia, Myanmar or Laos so of no concern to the Thai Junta.  They may well have been illegal workers too, who knows ?

The Junta will never stop the dangerous carriage of humans as it is the exploitation by the Elite of these self same workers that support the Junta.  That is why when the transportation of people was declared unsafe by the General, he soon withdrew the enforcement. Corruption at its worst level.

The carnage on the highways of Thailand continues to be increasing.  The biggest problem is speeding. Thais do not understand that speed kills are constantly driving over the speed limit and way too fast for road conditions. The police do nothing to stop it and simply react when an accident occurs.

In addition, throw in drink driving; the Thai habit of pulling out from a side road without looking; motorcycles continually driving the wrong way everywhere and you have all the needed ingredients that make Thailand Number 2 in the World in Traffic fatalities and accidents. It will never get better until the public is educated on how to properly drive and then backed up by strict law enforcement.

Sounds like a no-brainer for the police to decide surely.

Pickups themselves are not dangerous. Pickups in Thailand that are used as buses with

12 people in them are plain stupid, and if the PM and his government and the police cannot

fathom this then they are  st*pid as well. That's my opinion on this situation.

Geezer

We're going to wait and see the CCTV before deciding whether to charge this speeding pickup driver with charges. Maybe see if some brown envelopes are exchanged while we view the CCTV footage. RIP to the injured construction workers, but not to the speeding driver.
