A passport is proof of a persons citizenship, the passport may expire but the the citizenship doesn’t.
So yes, even in this time of heightened security, it’s perfectly possible to fly to, and enter, your own country on an expired passport, it’s a pretty regular occurrence.
An Emergency Travel Document is of course the preferred option and should save any problems from some carriers.
