The draw for the second round of the English Football League cup descended into chaos on Thursday.

Broadcast live from the Sky Sports studios in London,  former Scotland manager Alex McLeish and ex Crystal Palace and England winger John Salako were tasked with drawing the teams.

However, a major mix up left clubs baffled about who they would play against in the next round.

The confusion started when teams were being picked in the southern part of the draw.

The draw began with seeded teams being picked out first, followed by whether they would be playing at home or away, before finally their opposition being drawn.

But after already picking out three fixtures, Salako suddenly realised that the games had been drawn the wrong way round.

The mistake was realised when Salako said Norwich would be away at Charlton, when Norwich should have in fact been drawn at home.

As well as affecting Norwich and Charlton, the mix up affected a number of other teams including Brentford and Watford.

As the draw was being made, several teams had already posted on social media about who they thought they were going to play.

Only to then follow up the posts with their confusion as the draw unfolded in front of them.

Brentford tweeted: “we will be at home to QPR", before replying with “or we might be away, we're not quite sure!!”.

The English Football League later clarified the draw in full, which confirmed the first ties had been drawn incorrectly.

An EFL statement read: “In the Southern draw there was some confusion as to the home or away status of the first four ties. This has subsequently been clarified following a review of the TV output. The draw was in no way compromised.”

Previously known as the Coca Cola Cup, Worthington’s Cup and Capital One Cup, this isn’t the first time a draw for the Carabao Cup, newly named after being sponsored by the Thai energy drinks company of the same name has descended into chaos and required intervention from Football League officials to clarify the situation.

In June, the first round draw which was held in Bangkok, also descended into farce.

On that occasion, former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit and British Ambassador to Thailand Brian Davidson were on hand to draw the teams.

Issues with the first round draw, which was being broadcast live on Facebook, began when the stream crashed, leaving viewers around the world having to rely on updates on the EFL Twitter page.

Further confusion ensued when on screen graphics appeared to show that some teams were drawn twice .

A statement from the EFL blamed “human error” and “third party technical issues” for the problems.

The confirmed draw for the second round of the Carabao Cup is as follows:

When you see the vast sums of money this business generates, it is difficult to  understand the incompetence with which it is run. But then I look at certain governments and the light goes on!

I saw a thread on here a few months ago about Thailand hosting the World cup in the future the usual nonsense

A buddy of mine does live streaming as a preferred vendor of Facebook. He

does the most technically difficult live streaming production. I will forward

him this article and ask him to bid on this next year. Not saying there will not

be problems with the draw, but if he does it you will be able to see the draw

descend into chaos live.

Here are your numbers for the 3rd round draw in just over an hour's time. (If you're watching it you may need them given the balls ups in previous draws)
