Elephant Devours Durian In Daring Dawn Raid (Video)

By Asaree Thaitrakulpanich, Staff Reporter

PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN — An elephant with an appetite for durian raided a storeroom Sunday in the west of Thailand, eating about 40 of the fruit and causing 70,000 baht in damage.

At about 3am, the large male elephant used his tusks to knock down the wall of the Huai Sat Yai Agriculture Cooperative in Hua Hin, at which point he proceeded to devour the Pala-u durians inside.

I don't think elephants need to be "Daring". I once saw an elephant given a mandarin. Placed it under it's foot. Applied what could only be the smallest amount of pressure, split the skin and took out the flesh of the fruit. I along with a few other people (all Thais) who saw this were amazed. Highly intelligent creatures.

“It’s not the same elephant,” he said. “They trade off who comes here.”

What a great comment and I don't mean this in a disparaging way. They really are smart and it seems this lot like myself are hooked on the stuff. Magnificent fruit.

Elephants eating durians?  How do they get rid of the spiky skin, and I presume it's gas masks all around for farangs!

Thai construction standards are to blame! Looks like the elephant didn't need to work up a sweat to get to the durians. Next time, consider building the wall with something slightly more solid than papier mâché.

Blow me down with a feather intelligence exists give that elephant a spanner and in a week or 2 he would be a BMW technician and in a month a rocket scientist. i always love to watch ellies so graceful.
