Tourism and Sports Ministry promotes tourism in lower Northeast

BANGKOK, 21 August 2017 (NNT) – The Minister of Tourism and Sports has visited lower northeastern areas to revive the region's civilization, linking the public's way of life across five provinces and accelerate income distribution to the local areas.

Tourism and Sports Minister Korpkarn Watthanawarangkura said that the lower northeast has a strong potential in tourism. The ministry has prepared a GEO Park land management service plan to pave the way to elevate the area in becoming a World Heritage Site. The geological tourism route covers Nakhon Ratchasima, Buriram, Surin and Chaiyaphum province.

Over the past five months, more than seven million tourists had traveled the lower Northeast, up from the same period last year by six percent. It is believed there will more than 16 million visitors to the lower northeastern areas by year end, generating a revenue of at least 32 billion baht.

Additionally, Buriram province will host the MOTO GP event in October next year. The promotion of motorsports will serve as a strong strategy to stimulate tourism in the Northeast region. It is expected that more than 100,000 people from around the world will be traveling to Thailand to attend the event.
