BANGKOK’S FIRST PRISON-THEMED HOSTEL — With its narrow rooms, metal bars and bunk beds, Bangkok's first prison-themed hostel promises the look and feel of a real jail in the bustling Thai capital.

The Sook Station hostel in Bangkok's Udom Suk neighborhood offers guests pin-striped pyjamas for 700 baht (USD$21) and a wall with a height chart where they can have their mugshots taken.

The nine-room hostel is the first foray into the hospitality industry for Sittichai Chaivoraprug, 55, and his wife, 49-year-old Piyanat Teekavanich, after careers in the technology sector.

They were inspired by a shared love of travel and the 1994 prison escape film "The Shawshank Redemption", starring Morgan Freeman and Tim Robbins.

Freud would have had a field day with this.

Is it a grotesque commercial monument to our increasing enslavement to our global corporate/political masters - or just the latest line in pretentious b @ bs?

Every time I go to Bangkok I feel like I'm in prison. I don't have to stay in a prison-themed room to get that claustrophobic feeling. The entire city is like a large penal colony. If you combined the rap sheets as well as the unconvicted crimes of all the dodgy tattooed falangs you pass by just walking down the street, they would stretch from the earth to the moon and back again.

Last month I read in an U.S. newspaper or on a news website that a prison themed hotel opened up in Albuquerque, NM (June 2017). Obviously there will be design and accessory differences (many differences in the details), but don't knock the idea and criticize it as 'Thai'. Lot's of boutique hotels (and other businesses) in the world. Sometimes fresh ideas payoff. Wish them luck and move on.

There are many areas in Bangkok where you seldom see "dodgy tattooed falangs".  You might want to walk around the city a bit. Take a ride on the river or hang out in one of the nice parks. Bangkok is one of the great cities on this planet and I love to visit there.

If it's inspired by the movie, I wonder what time the bad guy comes by to be serviced?

Maybe stay out of the area where the hookers are?

Don't tell them to go away from Sukhumvit, that street and ONLY that one is BKK for most farang. They have no idea where to good places are, just let it go.
