A well attended meeting to discuss plans for a high speed train from Bangkok to Malaysia via Hua Hin has been held.

The meeting on Thursday of last week was principally organized by an advisory panel to sound out the opinions of people in Petchaburi regarding an alteration to a previously announced route.

In order to lessen the impact on Petchkasen Road the new plan is to deviate from the existing track south for a distance of some 18 kilometers.

Available land would be used some distance west of the main road artery from Thongchai sub-district.

The plan is to run the train from Bang Sue via Nakorn Pathom to Petchaburi then onto Cha-Am, Hua Hin and Prajuab before heading further south.

Mostly the old track will be followed though further minor deviations will be made where it is necessary to enable the proposed train to operate at high speed.

The latest finishing date for the project was announced as 2029. Some 15 million passengers are expected to use the service each year.

Billions of baht is expected to be saved by passengers when compared with the costs of road transport.

The project is one of several in the pipeline all over Thailand.
