BigOm19
Anyone resident in Mae Sot? What is Loy Krathong there like? Do you also release sky lanterns like in Chiang Mai? (I guess it may not be traditional to this area)
BigOm19
PS: Where are the good gathering spots on the river to see krathong? Edited September 12, 2017 by BigOm19
Jdietz
Large gatherings, music events, stalls and lanterns at the border area. It can get extremely crowded and a bit rowdy later on, so try not to get caught in the mass.

patrick kennedy
To be frank the only good thing in Mai Sot is the road out of it,the markets are expensive for what they have, the actual market area is like a gypsy site, its dirty and rough,in my opinion chiangmai or chiangrai, can beat it hands down,in every aspect. There is not one item in that market that comes anywhere near the price that it should be,in my opinion. BigOm19
I've been to Mae Sot, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Sukhothai etc at other times of year. Question was specific to Loy Krathong. Just didn't like the idea of jostling with PRC masses at the more obvious places for Loy Krathong but would still like to be somewhere with a more local, still festive atmosphere. That's all.
