So I take it there is no longer the free Loy Kratong Yee Peng Lantern Festival at Mae Jo and only one with a sizeable price tag to paticipate in. I also notice there is another similar lantern festival. also with a sizeable price tag, being held in the Mae Rim area. So I guess the days of the free Yee Peng Lantern festival are over.

You do it yourself... the real and traditional way... buy or make a kratong, go float it on the nearest stream, river, khlong.  Say your prayers and give respect to the river goddess.  Take some family or friends to do it together, or go in a group to anywhere on the ping river or some other nice place.  It's FREE!!!!!!!

You are only paying for organised events, on private property, with organised events.

Mae Jo is a pay-to-play event.

Originally it was free. Yee Ping was held usually a couple of weeks before Loi Kratong.

Then the monks brought in a pay-to-play-option, advertised in English, held on a weekend closer to Loi Kratong to cater for tourists. The original Yee Ping event, for free, continued.

Watgate is suggesting in this topic the original Yee Ping event is finished. Yee Ping and Loi Kratong are slightly different festivals. If it has been cancelled, I would guess this is due to the Royal Cremation. It would be sad if the main Yee Ping event was gone, Lanna culture is under huge pressure to conform with Thai culture, the language and tradition should be preserved, IMHO.

It was always free.

One on the Saturday nearest Yee Peng (full moon) free, with thousands of people, not advertised at all, Shhhhhhhhhh .........

One the Saturday after Yee Peng expensive, with hundreds of tourists, widely advertised for tourists that didn't know any better.

Last year the free event was cancelled by the General as part of Peace and Happiness for the people.

He says lanterns are dangerous and shut down all the factories making them.

That is really funny.  In our village and nearby villages, the kids make the lanterns, sell them to the shops who sell them to the general public.  Nothing like a factory.

Chiang Mai used a LOT. My misses used to sell a few thousand at the front of the Dhamma Center out of the back of our pickup each year and she was one of hundreds of people selling them.

The general decided lanterns are dangerous at the free event, but not the expensive event?  I'm not surprised.

Any information on whether lanterns will be dangerous at the free event this year?

There is a chance in a drought that they could cause a fire in wasteland, and they certainly pollute.

However, in a country already polluted to the max it doesn't really matter that much, and there may not be a drought.

They are a hazard to aircraft.

I used to watch them from the house in Lamphun, and there were literally thousands of them up there. Wonderful.

Don't get the point of this thread. Just look up ( assuming it will be allowed ). They can't charge for looking at the sky.

Do they throw fireworks in Chiang Mai? I stopped going to the parade in Lamphun as I treasure my eyesight.

How many aircraft have crashed due to 'floating lantern'

If  none I would venture not a hazard.

By that logic I need never wear a car seat belt because I never had a car crash before.

No, you need never wear a car seat belt if NOBODY had ever crashed a car.

Your logic is faulty.

Your logic is a venture in itself.  But tell us, why do the authorities limit the times that lanterns can be released and why do the airlines discontinue their flights during those release times?  Just for the heck of it?

And perhaps you might comment on what would happen if one of the lanterns (with their metal/wire rings) ever gets sucked into an airplane engine.

They are not as substantial as a goose or a duck.

When did you see flocks of geese or ducks flying over C M?

Largest birds I've seen flying in C M are pigeons.

Storks over the airport?

As they are wading birds and there is no large body of water near the airport, that I recall, I'd be interested if they were a threat to planes there. Not many left either as they are on the endangered list.

I lived in Lamphun for years and never saw flocks of geese or ducks flying about.

Rice paddy fields all around Hang Dong and Chiang Mai, you should get out a bit more.

Storks are all over the place.

There are some decorative-lakes on the Land-and-House project I was shown two-years-ago, just outside (West of) the airport-perimeter, lovely if you like to watch (and listen to) the planes.
