Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha on Monday (Oct 16) called an urgent meeting to monitor the flooding situation while the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has stepped up preparations for another round of deluge after Bangkok was told to brace for more rain until Oct 20.

Invited to attend the meeting included Gen Surasak Karnjanarat, the natural resources and environment minister, Gen Chatchai Sarikulya, the agriculture and cooperatives minister, Somkiat Prajamwong, director-general of the Royal Irrigation Department, and Supot Tovichakchaikul, deputy permanent secretary for natural resources and environment.

Issues discussed at the meeting included the latest flooding situation, progress in the diversion of water through the East and the West into the Gulf of Thailand, and remedial actions for people affected by the current flooding.

If i had one baht for every time i read this headline in the last 30

years, that money would have got lost in the next flood, mega

billions are spent on whims and egos of certain politicians and

army's bosses, still BKK is as bad as it use to be when it comes

to flood and inundations issues....

Would be nice if the tmd weather radar website worked properly 24 hours.

So we can see the rain coming and know when to go out.

In the past (years ago) it did work well with reports only 5 minutes late (Bangkok) - now they are 10-15 minutes late if even working and this has been the case for a very long time.  Sometimes one and other times both not reporting for hours or days.  Not to mention slow server.

let see what the mighty junta can do against nature and decades of bad city planning.

Step 1. Blame the nasty Shinawatras.

Step 2. Insist the situation was worse under a democratically-elected administration.

Step 3. Form a committee.

Rinse (no pun intended), repeat.

"The floods were this big," says Prayuth - it seems we're dropping the 'h', this week; back to Prayuth, next week, if his fortune-teller thinks it will bring Karma weather.

URGENT meeting-wise, you're 2 days late, pal . . . the flooding started on Saturday, became mega-serious on Sunday and more rain is forecast. Yet here you are, you and your 'shower', dressed to the nines, as if you're attending a fashion parade, trying to look engaged at this URGENT meeting. Seems that the framed cartoon icon has more sense than the lot of you and that the brightest light of the lot is the one above Prayuth's head. A PATHETIC show, as usual.

Footnote: Re dress code for meetings: Prayuth has instructed cabinet members to dress in the traditional phraratchathan (like the lilac-blue one, pictured) at meetings, rather than in Western suits.

I count 3 suits, 4 army shirts, one black T-shirt and only one phraratchathan. Interesting that P1, himself, has chosen just to wear his army shirt for this shambles of a get-together, where the tea probably got more attention than the tempest.

Of course no mention of the fact the heaviest rain since 1986.

In many, many, many reports I read over the weekend the "authorities" were quick to highlight that the Fri/Sat deluge was the heaviest since...fill in the blank (I saw both 1986 and 1988 mentioned).

Not sure why this is a valid reason for not addressing flood planning/prevention/mitigation?

example:

Bangkok governor Aswin Kwanmuang apologised in the afternoon but said officials had done everything they could,

“I don’t deny responsibility but the rain exceeded 200mm," he said, adding that the last time that happened was about 25 years ago.

They should have the meeting in the flood affected areas just like their mobile cabinet meetings. Have not seen any ministers making a tour of flooded provinces not the Bangkok Governor in the flooded streets directing drainage. That's what you get from non elected officials where accountability to the people is not necessary.

Its a valid reason for flooding, there is only so much you can do in certain cases 200mm  is a lot of rain. You can't expect drainage to be build for extra ordinary occasions. The price would be too high you make draining to normal specification and accept that once in a while you get flooded.

Though i would like to see how the giant tunnel draining the water has helped if it did not help then someone needs to be held responsible for it. It was a huge project and supposed to help with draining.. now if it does not work then heads should roll.

Like a poster on one of last week's forums, I have to ask, "Which tunnel?" Not being sarky or anything, I just want to Google it and a name or location would make this easier. Cheers.

And don't you just love the way he wears his 'meeting ordinary people' sash on these occasions? Such Thainess, but what a pillock, nonetheless.

Your posting history shows that you were not so forgiving of Yingluck's flood control efforts in 2011....wonder why that is?

Good to see he is putting the flooding problem as top priority.  As usual the farang keyboard warriors still whinge and complain ... lol

Image result for pics of Khun Prayuth Chan O Cha

Would have been even better to see the P-man having flooding as the top priority BEFORE Bangkok was underwater.

Need to take off the Junta tinted blinders bro.

I am still not really forgiving of her efforts because her government kept the dams topped up (to protect rice) and then they had to release it at the worst possible time and it cause a lot of extra damage. That is mismanagement. I don't blame her for the flooding itself.. just for making it worse by meddling with the dams to gain support of the farmers.

I am also not forgiving of the ones who made the tunnel if it does not work als promised (did you read my post at all).

I am just stating that you cannot build drainage to a specification to exclude all flooding as it would be too expensive. That is something that happens world wide. You don't take into account the worst case.. you go a little below that because otherwise it would cost too much.

If you read my other posts you would have read that I have questioned YL and Prayuts actions since 2011 and I think both did not do enough in the years that passed 2011.

Yingluck came to power after the 2011 flooding had already begun and and she kept on Abhisit's minister to provide continuity in flood management.... yet you still ranted against her.

Prayuth has had unopposed complete and total control of this flood prone country for over 3 years and yet......you cut him slack.

Given the criticism of Yingluck - do you think Prayuth has performed well?

If the capital is underwater during the cremation ceremonies due on 26th October, is it the General's fault?

(You sure as hell would be blaming Yingluck if this was happening on her watch)
