Agree.

And to comment on the thread title - My vote is for "or what"

This is really not that complicated, they sell only metric fittings, they should sell metric drills to match.

No calculations needed, for snug fit items like rivets and the like, use 3mm, 4mm, 5mm etc, then clearance for bolts use +.0.5mm, like 6.5mm, 8.5mm, etc. Just like they do in most of the world... and leave specialist shops to stock imperial for HD owners.

That way they would appear on the shelves in the correct order.

The standard sets sold everywhere I have been, 1-10mm in 0.5mm increments.

Not interested in reading your lips, you said and I quote "And an 8mm bolt fits in a 5/16" hole... And a 3/8" bolt fits in a 10mm hole."

1. So how do you get an M8 bolt in a 7.938mm hole, a 50 tonne press tool perhaps?

2. They don't sell 3/8" bolts or 10mm drills, so why does that matter.

There may be shops that sell metric drills, but the DIY shops around here sell imperial drills and metric bolts.

PS. 3/8" = 9.525 even worse and if you knew anything about very basic engineering you would know that you don't put an M8 bolt in and 8mm hole, you need a small amount of clearance. Certainly not an interference fit as you are suggesting.

You've not read what I've written.

By the way, your avatar suits you sir.

No more. Enough.

The guy has rubbed me up the wrong way in the past, and from now on, any post he starts i'm not bothering replying.

He asks for advice, asks a question, but already knows the answer.

I bow to his wisdom and knowledge. :cheesy: (amongst many - realizing a Chinese 16 bhp dual sport bike is not powerful enough for 2 up touring with luggage, to be replaced by a Japanese 22-24 bhp dual sport bike not powerful enough for 2 up touring with luggage - and many more inc this particular thread).

I try and be polite, offer my advice, but it is obvious by his replies, he does not read all of it, or maybe understand what I've written.

Life is too short to waste my time replying to anal, banal topics by an OP who doesn't fully understand the replies...

Don't sweat the details. He's doing his own thing. Sometimes guys don't need the exact answer they only want confirmation or otherwise that they did something not completely wrong. The luggage rack seems OK, except no support at the bottom for the bag, but he is obviously happy with it.

So he doesn't have one of these.

That's OK as well.

Try and steer guys in the right direction and have a laugh. That is what I get from TV.

No need to come on this Forum, ask for advice, receive the advice requested from guys who have been doing this their whole lives, and then nitpick, belittle, and insult those same people.

Do your own thing - I am a big believer. Doing it my whole life. But never been my thing to ask for advice and then attack the people who provide it.

Alexander Pope (1688 - 1744). It is found in An Essay on Criticism, 1709, and I can find no earlier example of the expression in print:

A little learning is a dangerous thing;
drink deep, or taste not the Pierian spring:
there shallow draughts intoxicate the brain,
and drinking largely sobers us again.

Looks good hardly noticeable that it isn't symmetrical and that will definitely help dissipate the heat. I same again great work.

Randell

it doesn't look not symetrical

because it is symetrical.

That's okay, if you guys think you can put a 8mm bolt in a 7.9mm hole, or even a 8mm drilled hole that;s fine and that requiring a hammer, or wiggling the drill around to make the hole big enough is "nitpicking", OK.

I insulted no one, but maybe this "nitpicking" upsets your hero worship, that's fine too, go for it.

It seemed to me to be good sense to use metric drills for metric bolts, as they do in most other parts of the world, that's all folks.

To late to edit, I would like to retract the "hero worship" comment, it was uncalled for, late night, early morning... and this <deleted> CRF is really getting to me.

Dragged myself into this, over a simple comment about drills.

and if anyone was insulted I apologise.

...and yes, my avatar was chosen for it's suitability, at least I like to think so.

Just remembered:shock1: maybe. The ones for the machine shop had the breast pocket on the inside?

Indeed. Don't want your pencil or pocket calculator falling out whilst over the spinning lathe chuck...

As for white warehouse coats, nah, not me.

Took too many drugs.

Drank too much alcohol.

Not enough sleep.

The brown warehouse coat suited me better.....

Jesus. Google is your friend, tapping drill for 8mm is 6.8mm. And that's off the top of my head......

I thought it was 6.7mm but then its been many years since Ive looked at a tap drill size chart so I could be wrong.

Yeah I had to search google as well, I found results ranging from 6.7 to 6.8 with some being 6.75.

6.75 make sense given a thread pitch of 1.25 which makes my 6.7 wrong as that is technically too tight and ive been doing it wrong !

8.2 clearance drill sounds bang on.

If what I was given is correct. I just sat in a chair but it was like being on a roller coaster. Could have been speed though. I never asked. A small drop of clear liquid on a piece of tissue paper.

You mean "feet and inches", I was looking for the correct term for you Yanks, we call it imperial.

Anyway are HD and others now using metric threads?
I doubt it. They still don't understand rear swing-arm geometry after all these years.
