Surveyor, 25, dies in Chai Nat road accident

By The Nation

A surveyor from the Royal Irrigation Department died when his pick-up truck rammed into the rear of a lorry in Muang district of this Central province of Chai Nat early on Sunday.

The man was identified from documents as Nathapong Somjaipeng, 25.

Somkid Wongchuen, the lorry driver, told police he was driving towards Suphan Buri on Highway 340 at about 60 kilometres per hour when he heard a loud noise from the rear at about 4am.

After pulling over, he discovered that a pick-up truck had crashed into the back of the lorry, and he called police.

Officers found the pick-up driver crushed to death behind the wheel. The airbag had inflated, and the vehicle was badly damaged, they said.

Somkid said he had been driving in the left lane, and speculated that the pick-up driver had fallen asleep at the wheel.
