Insulted the Thai people eh! If you say so.

I have a great deal to laugh about daily, thank you.

I am not the one that charged them with a crime, why personalize things?

Does anyone remember Yuyee?  A Thai hiso mother that is serving 15 years for less than 1/4 gram  of cocaine?  Do you really think these two men will be shown mercy?

Their best bet is to learn to be humble, to wai and to learn to walk in chains. My opinion is they will spend at  least 2 or 3 years in Thailand before they go home.

The joke is showing their butt of course. And that's all it is a joke. The fact that the Thai are 'offended" speaks volumes. No sense of humour, a sense of self importance that does not reflect well on them at all. This has nothing at all to do with gay lifestyle.

Those in power should show they are reasoned human beings, no one should be incarcerated over this. Nowhere in the world.

Your argument might hold water if we were discussing one isolated incident, but we aren't are we

This is one of two in Thailand alone not to mention other countries

They made a conscious decision to produce symbolic material that advertised their choice of lifestyle

Its anything but a joke, the only joke here is the fact they launched the material into the public domain while still in Thailand

Hence the joke as you see it is very much on them

They have offended a couple of over-the-top authoritarian religious nuts who are showing everyone how diligent they are.

They are turning Thailand into an even bigger joke than it is now.

Get a life; take a little humour into your miserable lives.

Cases such as this are showing that Thailand isnt a "joke" anymore

Its no longer a Disneyland for adults , you can longer come here and do what you like with impunity

Social media on their behalf (probably from the US), which embarrasses the country by showcasing it's over the top sentencing. It hasn't happened yet, but if lobbying was to occur I would expect it to very publicly attempt to shame the country on the appalling conditions in Thai prisons etc. High level social media exposure quite often steers policy here.

Aha.

I thought that might be what you meant.

I don't share your feeling that that would have much effect in this case and might even backfire.

Do explain where the "joke" is ?

Simply showing your sex organ in public is not any kind of joke .

Especially not in a Temple .

Was it supposed to be a joke , or was it a message to Buddhism ?

Do you really think that the Judges will read social media and take foreigners opinion into their sentencing decision ?

Sex organ 555 Your homophobic subtlety is stretching itself to the limit. You’re really struggling to find a good reason to bang them up to justify your homophobia. Give it up. You are making yourself look pathetic.

Are their bottoms used for sex ?

If indeed they are, then their bottoms are their sex organ .

Your brain is used for homophobia.

That's the most idiotic stupid argument imaginable.

You're suggesting that the bare butts of gay men are by definition more obscene than the bare butts of straight men or gay or straight women.

Butts are butts.

Holes are holes.

We ALL have them.

But not all of us are infected as some many clearly are with toxic homophobia.

The extra special hatred for the Butt Tourist guys is obviously being inflated by such toxic homophobia. You can see such hatred and filth anywhere where people are commenting on this.

Imagine how different it would be if they were two straight friends, brothers, or women (as happened in Cambodia).

There would still be understandable disdain for their actions disrespecting local culture, but it wouldn't be over the top raging hatred and ignorance we're seeing in this case.

People infected with toxic homophobia usually can't give it up. Best hope is for younger generations to be less afflicted that way.

I am not saying that gay mans bottoms are more obscene than  straight mens bottoms, I didnt even use the word "obscene", nor did I mention any other similar word .

I merely made the point that gay mens bottoms are used for sex, whilst straight mens bottoms are not .

That isnt homophobia, that is just stating facts

Oh please, they have been doing it at the Louvre too, what was the message then ? Religion I wish it did not exist. People seem to take it way too seriously.

It was perfectly ok to attack muslims using very insulting cartoons, and now just showing a few butts at a temple should be punished with a jail sentence. People advocating a jail sentence for this have completely lost it.

We are discussing an isolated incident, the other photos they took did not lead to the same kind of response. Both the French and the Americans did not arrest them, nor levy a fine. Apparently they do have a sense of humour.

The joke is on the Thai authorities, for being unreasonable and thin skinned.

There are plenty of Gay couples that do NOT have anal sex. There are also plenty of straight couples that have anal sex. Using the bottom for sex is therefore not even a gay exclusive thing. Sex organ or no sex organ, it is still a minor offence. Nothing to be worked up about, certainly not in this country. The brothel of SEA. Hypocrites the lot of them.

The joke is on the gay men for being thick skinned. They should have thought about Thai culture first. People are supposed to wear respectable attire around and in temples. They were a pair of insensitive and rude idiots

They might be, still does not mean they should go to jail.

Insensitive idiots should be fined, not jailed. Jail is for real criminals, such as someone that kills a police officer in his Ferrari, too bad he apparently wasn't on a watch list !

Yes, what they did is not admirable by any stretch of the imagination. But years in jail? Seriously?

Also to add, you're absolutely right just because a person has an identity as a gay man, doesn't mean you know what they do for sex unless they tell you. Trousers down showing bare butt is what it is. If they (or any person of any gender or orientation) had been displaying their butts in some kind of pornographic "come hither" pose, that would be different. They did no such thing. And that's a good thing, because can you imagine what they would be facing if they had!?!

I'd give em 6 months if I was the judge. Give em time to reflect and send out a signal to other fools thinking of pulling the same type of stunt.

Easy for you to say. I imagine lots of people don't even survive six months in jail here.

I get your message about sending a message. Personally I think a few days or a week worrying about being sent away for several years would be MORE than enough to get the same result.

Religion deserves no special status.

The state gives it such because religion is an effective means of control of the superstitious.

Sovereign nations can give it any special status they want like it or not. In this case it is clear disrespect was shown but I think it's also clear the accused were about getting a dramatic picture in an iconic setting rather than intentional insult. Yes ignorance isn't an excuse but I'm assuming that there isn't a requirement to seek convictions for all possible cases either. Is there?

As there has been no news of any outcome , that suggests that this incident is being taken very seriously .

Most minor offences, which warrant a fine are dealt with within a few days .

When you are in custody , you just speak with the Police and any other parties involved , all come to an agreement , go to Court the next day and receive the sentence , pay the fine or whatever and you are free to go , all dealt with within a few days .

This suggests that these guys are in big trouble

They are lucky in a sense.

If they are held together, they are both with their spouse and I imagine there are few married couples incarcerated as a couple.  They had planned to travel on to Cambodia and Indonesia. Indonesian laws concerning morality and religious disrespect are much harsher in fact I believe they cane there
