Hard Rock Maple Butcherblock or Oak Countertops?

Recommended Posts

Hey Everyone,

I wanted to ask if anyone knows if Maple butcher block or Oak countertops are available in Thailand?  I've looked everywhere & online & have only found local woods.  If anyone knows an importer of such products from America or Europe it would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you...

You are going against the grain to want timber worktops here.

There is often a reason they dont build from certain materials; expenses and durability being two.

The biggest problem with wood tops here is likely to be the humidity the cost and the lack of skills to fit it.

Ha; like everything else.

Your choice of course but for me a granite top at 600bt/m and labour also 600bt/m is a much wiser proposition all round.

I do have a definite bias towards teak....but, I suggest you consider teak as a countertop/butcher block. I have made both for myself and they have stood up well over a dozen years. Yes, teak is a 'soft' hardwood, but the inherent oils and waxes stop the penetrations of accumulated liquids/bacteria into the end grain. The Thais also know how to work with it to some extent. Cut the teak into cubes, end grain up, and use a high quality epoxy resin as an adhesive. What the Thai builder may need to know is that the teak cubes must be cleaned with a solvent like methyl hydrate prior to applying the epoxy resin. This will strip the natural teak oils on the surface to create a long lasting bond. For any such wood project make sure the moisture content is at approximately 10% to avoid cracking,

Padauk (mai pradoo) would be my second choice of local wood as it is often very tight grained. Meranti from Malaysia/Philippines is available but often loose grained and will absorb bacteria. Dark Red Meranti (a shorea species) is the hardest of the 'Philippine mahoganies'  Eastern hard Maple is, of course, an ideal butcher block wood.

Agree a million %.

Either concrete or stone counter top, depending on how long likely to be living in the house.

Even if able to find a wood one you like, more likely to be damaged and then have to replace whole thing.

Agree........was considering wood on the farang style kitchen at my old house, but went with granite and never regretted it.

I'm using this for cutting vegetables on a small island in the middle of the kitchen, not the main countertop.  I've not seen granite for 600/m it's about 5,500 & up from what I've seen.  I would like to use granite for the main counters but I'm not liking the colors & also I've been warned that they don't seal the granite here like in the states so it will stain.  Have you had any problems with that?  I'm leaning towards imported stainless, but it's not warm & has too much of the institutional look for my tastes, but it does last.  Thank you for your inputs, they are greatly appreciated.

I wasn't sure about my granite tops so I bought some sealer and did it myself; pretty easy really. Also look at many granite wholesalers as you may be surprised at how many colours are available.

600 baht per square meter is possible, 5,500 would be a very special type if even available here. Marble can be that expensive and does stain more easily. Are you sure you have not been pricing marble?

Stain is only a problem with some of the less common types.

They seal here but better to get a quality sealant and diy.

I was quoting 600 per metre run not sqm.

99% of granite here is from China the expensive 1% is coming in from India and sometimes Egypt.

The cheaper 600bt stuff will be the more composite conglomerate styles such as Sarkulapan

The price goes up with the solid blacks and reds and a bit more with the aluminium flecks.

Its rubbish what you hear about sealing and every fitter should be carrying his own jug of sealer to rub into the new cut outs and chamfered edges that they form on site.

Granite should be resealed every year but uou can test it with a droplet of water on the surface. If it soaks in after 5mins you need to reseal it...if not its still good.

But sealing is just a precautionary measure certainly the harder mono slabs by their very nature are impervious.

Shop around the roadside granite outlets prices are cheaper than you think.

For 9k baht total i had a 7.5m worktop run plus a 2m shelf in the bathroom.

The cheapest granite in Chiang Mai is over 2,000 & it's not nice, average is 5,000-8,000 per Sq meter & yes I am sure I"m not pricing marble.  Some marble is more than the granite here.  Where can you buy granite for 600/sq meter?  I'm not getting the warm fuzzies with the colors they offer here, the Brazilian stuff is amazingly beautiful but not available here, if it were available it would probably not be affordable.  I may end up with Stainless for the main counters & import a butcher block top for the island.  I appreciate everyone's input, thank you again guys!

5,500 and up
Now over 2,000
Big drop in a short time
Still wrong

No point in telling you where to get 600 because it will not give you the warm fuzzies

Stainless will be good for you, like a hotel kitchen

I have visited and eventually ordered granite after spending a week looking at every outlet and every store.

Not rven sukkapan are selling with such a mark up.

Sounds like you are picky but fine if you want the reds or blues you can pay as much as 1500/m but you need to look hard to find suppliers that actually stock it or can be even bothered to bring it in from Egypt.

Even in the uk you would be hard pressed to pay 5500 for a kitchen including fitting.

If you want me to steer you two particular places i will or you can continue to grumble because your research took you to one place.
