What is the approximate Water Hardness level in Bangkok for tap water? Setting water softener for dishwasher

Featured Replies

What is the approximate Water Hardness level in Bangkok for tap water?

I'm trying to set up the water softener on my Electrolux dishwasher. They have a table with various different units but I cannot find any info about this from Google, except this

The surface water sources are considered to be low in minerals which can be considered moderately soft. The hardness is not an issue for MWA public water supply.

Hardness of drinking water under WHO 2008-recommendation must be less than 300 mg/l. whereas the hardness of MWA public water supply is in average of 70 mg/l during 2000-2010.

That would convert to 9.8 German degrees so I'd set the water softener level to 2. Does this sound correct?

You seem to have done the necessary homework. If "2" is at the "soft" end of the scale then that will do the job just fine. If you get streaking on your glasses turn it up a notch.

Whilst we do see a little staining on chrome-work, the kettle is scale free. Bangkok water is nothing like the hardness we got in the SW UK where you could almost see the rocks coming from the tap.

Thanks, makes sense. Yeah we haven't used any salt yet in the dishwasher but all glasses are a bit white after washing so figured out it was important.

True about the UK!

As said water in Bangkok is mostly sourced from rain and not very hard but have not measured the readings above here in LatPhrao over the last 2 years.  Normal range has been 110-160 PPM mg/L using my TDS-3 meter (not a lab standard but not bad).  I use to confirm operation of RO drinking water filter.  Have dishwasher set for low hardness and use rinse aid and detergent sourced from HomePro - the salt just buy cheap cooking salt from stands on coast.

Test today was 130 source and 024 after filtration.

any links or details on cheap cooking salt from the coast?

im assuming its a lot cheaper than finish salt...

Much, much cheaper - but we buy from venders on roadside as children travel that route every weekend.  HomePro sells salt which is probably a lot less expensive than Finish if no other source.  Expect most markets will have someone selling.  If you have to buy from supermarket this should work fine at about 31 baht per kg.
