Environment minister reviews plans to control forest fires in Lampang

LAMPANG, 12 December 2017 (NNT) – The Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment has prepared measures to contend with forest fires that usually occur during the dry season, planning to focus on dissuading citizens from lighting fires in the wild and making a rapid response when needed.

Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment Gen Surasak Kanjanarat and ministry permanent secretary Vijarn Simachaiya have visited the Forest Fire War Room set up in Lampang province to meet with officials and representatives of relevant agencies and discuss plans to control forest fires and haze.

The four agencies with direct responsibilities over the matter briefed the two ministry officials on their plans, which include precautions, fostering of understanding among the public and provision of equipment in at-risk areas. They assured the officials that people who violate the law or regulations in ways that could result in widespread fires will be dealt with to the full extent of the law.

Authorities are also to use the messaging application Line more regularly to ensure that communication between operation bases and officials in the field will be rapid and effective. They are also to employ drones to gain a wider view of monitored areas and compare the data with satellite imagery to inform operations.

Gen Surasak emphasized that haze and forest fires are mostly a man-made problem and that the quelling of fires is a downstream solution. He asserted that the best solution to the annual issue is public understanding and cooperation, bidding authorities to watch the people responsible closely and respond promptly as necessary.
