Record Low of -5 Degrees Celsius Recorded on Doi Inthanon

CityNews – Thermometers hit a shocking -5 degrees Celcius this morning, December 21st, 2017, according to the weather station attached to the Thai National Observatory on Doi Inthanon.

 

People have reported seeing ice sheets on the nearby rivers, and heavy frost in the area.

I don't think -5 is that shocking for Doi Inthanon at this time of year.

Frosts are very common up there during the cool season every year.

There is frost there most years at around 8,000 feet, the frost line moves but the general area of it is easily identified, trees below it, none above it. Wear cold weather gear if you go up there, it can be worse than the UK at times.

No record at all. To be recognized as a record, it must be measured according to standards. From other news " ...used a digital thermometer to measure the temperature at ground level in front of the observatory". Instead, it should be measured at 2m height above the ground and protected from air flow. In fact, the same Observatory has an online weather station showing that the minimum  air temperature in the last nights was several degrees above zero.

 

But why get the facts get in the way of a nice headline.
