80-Meter Bridge Collapses After Tugboat Collision

The collapsed bridge Thursday afternoon.

 

NAKHON PATHOM — A tugboat driver was hit with a minor fine Thursday morning after his vessel smashed into a bridge and made it collapse.

 

The bridge in front of Wat Thaiyawat across the Thai Chin River in Nakhon Pathom province completely collapsed after Sumet Tappandee, 35, lost control of the soybean-carrying tugboat and rammed it into one of its pillars.

It's not a tugboat that brought the bridge down. It is a convoy of fully laden barges.

 

Don't know what the total weight would be but my very rough guess....... in excess of a thousand tonnes.

Five years past due expired license, according to the news report.

 

Glad to see the maritime police are keeping up their end of the bargain.

 

Meanwhile, time to pull out that old chestnut -- Guess they just don't build 'em the way they used to...

Not only a 2000 baht fine. Other charges - damage to property for one - are pending, but that info isn't in the above story or link.

The tugboats used here seem very small considering the large barges they are towing. Often I see 3 barges being towed by one small tug boat

Brake failure. 

Scrub that bridge from the annual inspection/ maintenance register.

Lucky no one was on the bridge and that the bridge  did not sink the tug boat.
