While noting that the electrical system at Khon Kaen airport was obsolete, Transport Minister Arkhom Termpittayapaisith said that the exact cause of the fire at the airport on Friday (Jan 26) was still unknown pending an investigation by forensic officials.

The minister who inspected the airport on Saturday said that airport officials regularly inspected the electrical control room, but he admitted that electrical equipment had been in use for about 20 years without being replaced.

An airport official reportedly said that he spotted sparks from the electrical control room and quickly used a fire extinguisher to douse the fire, but without success as fire consumed the entire circuit board.

And was the fire extinguisher filled with a non-conductive agent such as inert gas, powder or CO2 specific for electrical fires or did he just get lucky:smile:

Obsolete equipment and (quote) Although the airport resumed operations late Friday afternoon, the reserve communication system did not function properly. Just wonderful. Had it ever been tested? No answer needed to that question, I'm sure.

Regular inspections without replacing 20 yr old equipment

Well where's an electrician when you need one

Everything in Thailand is obsolete. Sewage systems, aircraft carriers, Bangkok traffic systems, the legal system, the education system, public buses, Koh Samui recycling furnaces.... I could fill the page.
