khwaibah Posted February 14, 2018 Posted February 14, 2018 Found out the hard way that Thai roads are not a Hollywood movie set. R.I.P. 1
Just1Voice Posted February 14, 2018 Posted February 14, 2018 Article says he was traveling "at speed" and overshot the curve. Unfortunate accident possibly caused by carelessness.
ChrisY1 Posted February 14, 2018 Posted February 14, 2018 If this was a major cycling event, with many riders, one would think that the road should be closed for the duration....anywhere else but here! 1 1

If this were a "major cycling event" like a UCI authorised race, then, yes, the road would be closed. However, even for many UCI Cat 2 races, the protocol is for a rolling closure on just one side of the road with warnings for oncoming traffic that a race is in progress. Riders are not permitted to use the "wrong" side of the road. But this was for the majority of riders a sportive not a race let alone a UCI authorised race so the fact that oncoming traffic was permitted is not surprising. Also bear in mind the huge number of riders mean the start was staggered over several minutes and very quickly the field was spread out over time gaps of over an hour. Not possible to have total road closure. 2
Popular Post Ape1983 Posted February 14, 2018 Popular Post Posted February 14, 2018 RIP to this great character, having waved to the gentlemen as I came down the mountain I felt sad reading of his death. So many colourfull characters make Thai sporting events. Yes nothing is perfect here or anywhere else in the world but no need for sarcastic comments from keyboard warriors. RIP 5
Popular Post Jeremy50 Posted February 14, 2018 Popular Post Posted February 14, 2018 Yep, usual flippant and thoughtless comments one learns to expect from some TV users. It's a tragedy, we don't know the details, and this road is used by dozens of sport cyclists Thai and Western every day of the week. RIP. 5 1

"The Iron Man Cyclist was on his way back into the city cycling downhill at speed when he overshot a corner and crashed head on with a truck on the opposite side of the road." 1

It may have been but the Inthanon Challenge is an uphill race. So it was over and he was going downhill after the event? Quote For much of the time, roads are semi-closed, giving the front-runners a clear ride to the top, but it's a different story for the second half of the field, as traffic stacks up. Top guys take 2 hrs+ so one can imaging how long the average Joe takes He could have run out of brakes or forgotten there was a very sharp curve at that point or their could have been spilled fuel on the road or.... It is sad but just another road traffic collision. Looking at the bike it was quite a big hit.
