Boris Johnson urged to quit after Thailand sex tourism remarks

Johnson compared May to the Old Testament’s Moses, described the English Channel as a moat, and said Brexit will be good for ‘organic carrots’

THERESA May’s decision to put up Boris Johnson to give the first of her Cabinet’s “Road to Brexit” speeches designed to woo Remainers backfired yesterday after the gaffe prone Foreign Secretary was plunged into renewed controversy after making an offensive joke about sex tourism to Thailand – which has notoriously involved the abuse of children.

His address, meant to be a serious attempt to unite people in the UK ahead of its departure from the EU, descended into the bizarre as he compared the Prime Minister to the Old Testament’s Moses, described the English Channel as a moat, talked about Britons going on stag parties to European capitals and said Brexit would be good for “organic carrots”.

But it was his remarks on British tourists going to Thailand for sex which prompted the most criticism.

The written copy of his speech issued to journalists beforehand said: “As I have just discovered we have more than a million who go to Thailand every year, where according to our superb consular services they get up to the most eye-popping things.”

Sitting too close to the stage at a go-go might do that. Haven't heard of any stray dart cases lately. However, NHS should hand out safety glasses with a travel advisory.

My thoughts exactly - what he said was hardly a lie and lets be frank about it, a fair number of those tourist have gone on to marry the lady (or man) who made their eyes pop in the first place!

If I walk down the street every day for a year and every day a bird poops on my head, it may seem to me like that's a normal thing- no problem...

I don't know whether Thailand draws them in that way, or desensitizes them once they get here, but the opinions expressed here don't come close to matching the mainstream opinions back home.

British foreign secretary jokes about British sex tourism in Thailand during major Brexit speech

British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson who just visited Bangkok early this week appeared to joke about sex tourism in Thailand during a major speech about Brexit in his home country, the Independent online reported Thursday.

In an address in which he outlined his vision for the country’s departure from the EU, he also quipped “the right deal on aviation and on visa-free travel” would allow Britons “ever more intensively to go on cheapo flights to stag parties in ancient cities”.

Johnson continued, “As I have just discovered we have more than a million who go to Thailand every year, where according to our superb consular services they get up to the most eye-popping things.”

“If we get the right deal on aviation and on visa-free travel – both of which are in our mutual interest – this expansion of UK tourism will continue, not just beyond the EU, but within the EU itself; and we will continue ever more intensively to go on cheapo flights to stag parties in ancient cities, meet interesting people, fall in love, struggle amiably to learn the European languages whose decline has been a paradoxical feature of EU membership.”

His comments, made in a ‘Road to Brexit’ speech in which he attempted to reach out to Remain supporters, were described as “off-colour” and  “embarrassing” by some on social media, the online reported.

One Twitter user said: “Boris Johnson going on about Brits committing illegal activities in Thailand and stag parties in ancient cities. This is our international reputation? How sad.”

Another wrote: “Harming our reputation and making light of serious behaviour, even criminal abuse, is a step too far even for him.”

Liam Kirkaldy (@HolyroodLiam) : In a keynote speech on Brexit Boris Johnson is talking about measuring the English channel with his fingers, referring to it as a moat, and making jokes about the things that go on when Brits go to Thailand. This is terrifying.

6:25 PM - Feb 14, 2018

Johnson met Thailand’s Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and Foreign Minister Don Pramudwina during a tour of Asia this week.

After talks on trade and security, he said he would “look forward to further strengthening the UK’s relationship with Thailand in the future”.

Ridiculous overreaction to a comment that didn't even specifically mention sex tourists and i see how the ante has now been upped to include child sex tourism.

Just shows how empty this major speech on Brexit was if this is the talking point that came out of it.

And?? Couldn't that be something positive, like in: "This Iranian baker does eye-popping things..."

I think, the problem is not his comment, but the sleazy thoughts of journalists and readers alike, condemning both, his completely innocent joke, as well as the 'more than a million who go to Thailand every year'.

And what is that reference about 'abuse of children'? Are the 'million who go to Thailand every year' considered paedoes now??

while the comment was insulting (but not wholly inaccurate) to thailand and to the vast majority of visitors here who dont partake in the sex industry i can, after seeing for myself the way certain visitors (sex tourists) behave here, to some extent sympathise with the staff who have to provide consular services and deal with such individuals.

I think it is the "superb consular services" quote that should get him fired personally. ?

Can you back that with a first hand account of percieved failure or is it based on something gleaned from a 'bloke in a pub'?
