Round about 2009, I got my Thai drivers license at the DLT in Bangkok, somewhere around the Bang Na area, I had a UK license so did not have to do the actual driving, but did everything else, I got the license but cannot remember if it was for one year or two, when it came the time to renew, I got a new five year license at Nakhon Sawan DLT, fast forward to October last year when I was in the UK. I lost my license which by this time it was out of date.

So now I decided to get a new one while I was down here in Pattaya, I reported it to the police, then went to Pattaya DLT to get a new one. They told me the license was not on the computer, I told someone about it, and they said it must have been a fake.

There was nothing under hand about it,  I did everything legal, passed the eyesight and brake tests etc. Can anyone tell me any reasons why my license was not on the computer? Could it have been incompetence by someone at Bangkok or Nakhon Sawan DLT? What should my next step be?  Thanks.

Mmmmmm, yes....

Get another fake, sorted !!

It is just as well I did not have to make any claims. If this happened in a western country I could do something about it, but this being a  third world country, probably not.

All you have to do is apply for a new licence the same way as you did before and start again.

On the subject of incompetence, that wouldn't have raised it's ugly head if you (a) hadn't let the licence expire and then (b) hadn't lost it.  But maybe you're right and it is all the LTD's fault.

and you have never lost anything then? Besides I let it expire because I knew I had a year before I had to renew it again, and just let my wife do the driving meantime as I always use the motorbike.

I would go to Nakhon Sawan DLT and see what they say, with a Thai speaker to talk...

On my visits to our DLT I saw a big room with filing cabinets full of folders.

So they seem to keep paper copies at the issuing office.

Well maybe I should do what Transam says, but Nakhon Sawan is about 60 Ks from my house, I can go anytime but my wife is always working during the week days.  I will try and think of something. If only I had not lost my license.

You still have your foreign driver license?

Maybe you can easily do a new thai driver license?

I just had done mine last week and in Bangkok (MoChit) it really was very easy.

Bit off topic but a weee tip. In case of lost/stolen license, scan and print off both sides of your license on one sheet of paper and keep handy to take to DLT...:stoner:

OP, it doesn't matter if you find your old license, or a record of having one, it is well and truly expired and you will need to go through the process again. They probably have a record of you once holding a 5 year license but in terms of a renewable license its like its not in the system, it cant be renewed after a certain time frame. (probably more a lost in translation thing rather than not in the system)

Thai wife is currently getting a new car license from scratch as she let her 5 year license expire for more than a year. Its like she never had one, she is booked in to do the driving test, written test etc.

Suggest you hurry up with it as my wife has been told there are some changes coming in the next couple of months. a specific medical , more questions, and 10 hours training.

I am not doing a new one just because of someones incompetence, and certainly not traveling to Bangkok. but thanks.

In my opinion, all Thai driving licences should be reclassed as "fake"

Yes, but not all, certainly most, if the people driving are Thai.:cheesy:

I will keep that in mind thanks. 10 hours training when I am an experienced driver?? They can stuff it.

I would bet that this is all about the translation and understanding of the facts of the matter.  Not in the computer means that it is not available to renew, thus the OP has to do the whole thing over again.

The only incompetence I see is not understanding this fact.

I usually keep a backup of important documents in Google Drive. It comes free, offers 15 Gigabyte of storage, and is accessible from any device. All you need is a (free) gmail/google account and that's it. Other options might be box.com, dropbox.com, or whatever.

Yes, it should and maybe it was.

Was your name spelled correctly? I don't know how accessible the database is to other DLT's, especially for older DL's, nor what happens to the information if a licence has expired more than one year.

I will just have to wait and see, I will try and do what Transam says, thanks for your help.

So I am incompetent because I want to question why my perfectly legal driving license was not in the system?

The DLT is not incompetent here at all, and I am? Do you understand this topic at all?

Read what I posted. What I believe happened is - during translation - the meaning was lost. Your DL not being in the computer means that it is not able to be renewed as listed in the computer, not that it is not totally gone from the database.

I understand one thing - YOU lost your DL. This is the price you pay.

I am sure it is in the database, just not in the 'You can renew' section, it is in the 'Start from Scratch' section. And not due to the DLT incompetence - look a little closer to home, to who lost it.

In your OP - I lost my license which by this time it was out of date.

Which is not a perfectly legal drivers license because it is out of date.

Do you not understand what you posted at all. !

When I lost it, I reported it to the police, they gave me a letter which I took to the DTL where I got it. Correct me if I'm wrong, but should they not have me on record until one year after my license has expired? I went to sit the test in Pattaya, to renew and get another five years and they would not let me as in their words "Your license is not on the computer, it must be a fake".

I would wager your details are on the system where you got your license from..Do you have a license for bike and car..?

No, I had lost it and reported it to the police, they gave me a letter confirming this, then I gave it to the DTL.

Did the police check if you actually had a license on their system or they just took your word for it..?

I would have thought the BiB had a link to the DTL as one cannot tax a ride if you have an outstanding fine etc..
