Bangkok and Nonthaburi declared temporary rabies epidemic zone

Bangkok and Nonthaburi have been declared a temporary rabies epidemic zone for March 6 until April 4 by the Department of Livestock Development (DLD).

DLD deputy director-general Cheerasak Pipatpongsopon said Friday (March 9) that the declaration of temporary rabies epidemic zone means that all stray dogs and cats would be caught by authorities for vaccination against rabies and kept in quarantine.

Owners of dogs and cats must bring their animals for vaccination, failing that they may face a fine of 200 baht for each pet animal in their care.

Nonthaburi has been infested for almost a year now, why do they call it temporary?

And why are the fines only 200 baht? Who cares for that?

200 THB really that going to make difference

The idea of Thai dog ownership is completely different to responsible dog ownership dog are chucked rice  and mostly left alone outside of the property

Thai mantra

It it bites you its not their dog

if you hit it or injure it  its worth a fortune

So they take the trouble to round up "all" strays, vaccinate...keep them for a while...and then what, just let them back out onto the streets again ?

What fines? Why in the world would they be necessary. Put all theese soi dogs out of teir misery and clean the streets at the same time.
I am willing to take on the bill for the extermination. Overtime work also accepted and promoted.

The DLD estimated that there are about 3.4 million stray dogs and cats throughout the country.

They should try bartering dogs for submarines or highspeed trains.

Yes great idea it worked with chickens for fighter jets.

Haven;t seen Bangkok as a rabies hot zone in the tourist brochures yet. Still sure the TAT can put a happy swing on it

The thing is, with dogs, there's more meat on the bone for everyone.

For those that have ben reading news on ThaiVisa for the last 10+ years - they are fully aware that this madness was going to happen.

How many hundreds of threads have there been regarding these dangerous Soi mutts. Still the dog lovers want them inoculated.

I am a dog and cat lover. But you  have to see the reality of this situation. Rabies death for a human and the consequences for everyone coming into contact

with them is dire on a level you cannot believe.

Real dog lovers, take care of their dogs at home and give them all the correct medication they require, they don't go around feeding marauding packs of deadly poisonous monsters.

Does any one who has children really want to see what happens ???

Twice I have had to be treated because there was the possibility that I had come in contact with an animal that had rabies. The first time was when I was 6 years old, held down by 4 adults and injected directly in the stomach every day for 7 days - my parents had to get the injections for 14 days.

8 years ago in Thailand I had to get the injections, 4 of them - thankfully, now it is in the arm - but still painful.

You reap what you sow, and Thailand will suffer badly if any tourist, Western, Chinese, Russian or Japanese dies from this, and even more so
if they take the disease home with them on a plane full of other people....!!!

I can only say it again and again government need to take responsibility and take all street dogs away now and Thai people don't care about 200baht fine 10000 baht better and in future chip the dogs so owners are responsible for any accidents dogs cause

Many years ago I was in Sri Lanka, staying with a local family, the father at the house took me into the jungle to a poor family house. When we went in the hut a woman was tied to a post, she was in the later stages of rabies, terrible sight.
